The Security Sector

IE8 beats rivals ... according to Microsoft!

It was nice to hear that IE8 has made marked improvements in detecting malware -- by 17% since March. I read in Gregg Keizer’s Computerworld piece, “IE8 whips rivals in blocking malware sites,” that IE8 was able to spot a whopping 81% of sites infected with attack code. That all sounds well and good, but it’s not available for the Mac -- my computer of preference.  Add to that the fact that Microsoft’s security team sponsored the testing and I feel a little uncomfortable. I don’t doubt the validity of the statistics; I don’t believe they’d taint the testing to skew the results. After all, they did have to get inspired when they feared their Microsoft users were jumping ship seeking out other browsers. Necessity has always been the mother of invention.

What People Are Saying

A step in the right direction

The addition of filtering to IE8 and other newer browsers is certainly a step in the right direction but as usual the devil is in the detail. In this particular test sites which actually deliver malicious software direct to the user, so called 'drive-by downloads' were not tested. The research in the recent Sophos security threat report shows that the majority of sites that are hosting some form of dangerous content are actually legitimate websites that have been broken into. Although blacklists may pick these up after a couple of days there will always be a delay between the time the site becomes dangerous and the time it is blocked in your browser. Security built into the browser is a good move but it's still not enough to fully protect you online.

Translation....

ie8 renders so differently from ie7 it is unable to run 81% of ie specfic sites ;)

No IE8 compatability problems here...

I use IE8 every single day, on many, many, different web sites, and have had zero compatability problems.

So?

I use IE6 and can say the same thing.
