TomTom GPS app comes to iPhone and iPod touch
TomTom is finally on the iPhone as of Midnight last night. Coming in at around the equivalent of $100 globally, it is the biggest turn-by-turn app to hit the iPhone platform since its inception. It is certainly a better product than what AT&T has on offer.
I say platform because it is also available on the iPod touch, if you buy the Car kit which has its own GPS built in. These devices won't have access to the online features (unless you are lucky enough to be near a Wifi access point). Next month's iPod will likely have GPS built-in to go with the new camera so it could theoretically do turn by turn.
But is the $100 application worth it? You can buy a standalone GPS for your car for significantly less. In fact, you can buy a Refurbished TomTom One at Amazon for under $50. And this device won't stop working if you get a phone call or want to play with any of its other 60,000 possible applications.
On the other hand, the iPhone app does more than just GPS Turn-by-turn. According to the app's description, it uses the web to find smarter routes, it can find your contacts by their address in your iPhone and it provides a call link to call the restaurant you are driving to:
Everywhere you go, you can have the most advanced TomTom navigation technology to lead the way. The TomTom app puts award-winning technology at your fingertips, like IQ Routesâ„¢ which gives you the smartest, most efficient route any time of day.
Tap and go - Using iPhone’s innovative technology, the TomTom app lets you tap your way from A to B – putting you in touch with all the best routes. Scroll through the menu, or pinch to zoom in and out on a map using the iPhone’s multi-touch display.
Go your own way - Why follow the rest? See your route, your way. Simply rotate from portrait to landscape to get an easier view of the road ahead.
Meet up with friends - Find an entry in your iPhone contacts list, and the TomTom app will find the way there. It’s that simple.
Find a place to eat - Thinking of stopping for lunch on the way? Choose a restaurant, call to reserve your table, then find your way there – the TomTom app does it all.
If that is all they've got, I'll take the standalone.
