Defensive Computing

A 12 inch netbook computer for only $379

Some people are buying netbooks to use as their main computer. I'm a big fan of netbooks, but there is no getting around the small keyboard and screen, they are best used sporadically rather than constantly.

Back in May, I wrote that I expected a new class of netbook computer, those with 12 or 11.5 inch screens, would be the perfect mating of low price with a keyboard and screen good enough for everyday, continual use.

One of this new class of netbooks, the Lenvo S12, is currently on sale for $379 (with free shipping). This is an amazingly low price for a 12 inch netbook.

There are multiple models of the S12 and this price is for the cheapest one.

A month ago, when Brad Linder did a lengthy review of the next-model-up S12, it was $499. That model, with an Intel Atom processor, now sells for $449. For $379 you get a VIA Nano processor.

Still, no one buys a netbook for the performance, it's purchased for some combination of price, portability and operating system.

The most important aspects of the S12, for me at least, are the full sized keyboard and the 12.1 inch 1280x800 screen.

I have not used an S12, or seen a review that comments on just how pokey the VIA processor may or may not be. Certainly the glossy screen will be a turn-off for some.

On the other hand, Linder notes that "Typing on the IdeaPad S12 keyboard is virtually the same experience as typing on a laptop with a 14 inch or larger display" and he estimates the battery life to be between 5 and 6 hours.

He also agrees with me about prefering a larger netbook. He writes

As much as I love a 10 inch netbook, I find myself frequently grabbing the larger IdeaPad S12 when I’m on the go because it has many of the benefits of a netbook including long battery life and relatively small size and light weight, with the added advantage of a screen that can display significantly more information.

What People Are Saying

Days Are Numbered

Word is, once Windows XP is replaced by Windows 7 Starter Edition, Microsoft will be dropping the maximum allowed screen size from 12” to 10”. So enjoy your 12” netbook while you can—its price will be going up soon. Dell have already got rid of theirs.

Nonsense

The demand will configure the market and units with 11.6" and 12.1" screens are already hot items. Acer just came out with it's 1410 model with the CULV processor (SU3500, Core 2 Solo) which runs rings around the Atom is the unit is only $449. I'm buying one tomorrow.

It's nice to see, if only

because notebooks with a 12 inch screen used to be the high end option, being considerably more expensive than 15" models. You had to pay for the portability.

But for my money, I'll sacrifice small size and take the Acer(or was it Toshiba? I forget.) 17", great keyboard with separate numeric keypad, 3GB Ram, Celeron 2.2GHz processor on sale for $349! Yep! $30 less than your netbook.

Forgot to mention

that was at Walmart

No Lenovo for me

Lenovo and MSI (and another one, I can't remember which) like to put their "FN" key in the corner where the "CTRL" key should be. For that reason alone I won't buy their notebooks/laptops or netbooks.

is this lenvo or lenovo ? confused a bit .. like Nokia and Nokla.
thanks

There are newer ones....

I just noticed that Acer has released an 11.6" notebook with an SU3500 processor. Those are a lot more powerful than the Atom and it can do 720p high def (1366x768). Looks like it's priced to move at around $450. J&R in NYC had 2000 pre-orders for it and is filling them now.

No Lenvo or Lenovo or Jay

No Lenvo or Lenovo or Jay Leno for me, Asus makes the best dern netbooks, hands down...and at the right prices. Got mine at Target (with full return privileges and no restocking fee) for $249.99!
