Seeing Through Windows

Microsoft rejoices: Windows XP use drops

The biggest danger to Windows 7 and Windows Vista isn't Mac OS X or Linux --- it's Windows XP, whose hard-core fans refuse to give up the aging operating system. But it looks as if XP may finally be on the way out, which is good news for Microsoft.

Computeworld reports that according to the Web measurement company Net Applications

Windows XP's share of the OS usage market fell 1.1 percentage points during August, tying its November 2008 record drop.

At the same time, Vista and Windows 7 use was up, Vista by 0.9 percent, and Windows 7 by 0.3 percent. Windows XP is still dominant, though, with 71.8 percent use, compared to 18.8 percent for Vista, and 1.2 percent for Windows 7. Mac OS X use has stalled, with 4.9 percent share.

As I've written before, in Microsoft's biggest enemies: Windows XP and IE 6, XP's continuing dominance presents a serious problem for Microsoft. Enterprises staying with XP means they're not paying for upgrades to Vista or Windows 7. As for consumers who opt to stay with XP, the problem isn't really upgrade revenue, because consumer upgrades are a drop in the bucket. The real problem is that XP users don't buy new PCs, and so Microsoft is losing out on new sales.

I think that Windows 7 will go a long way towards solving the problem for Microsoft. It's gotten a far better reception than Windows Vista did, so enterprises won't shy away from it. And XP PCs are starting to look long in the tooth, so consumers will most likely be ready to get new hardware -- and new versions of Windows.

What People Are Saying

XP slowdown?

Has anyone else noticed that Microsoft has been producing an unusual number of updates for Windows XP lately? The size and volume of the updates has ground my laptop to a halt. The cynic in me wonders whether this is Microsoft's not-so-subtle way of getting me to buy a new Windows 7 machine.

XP slowdown

Absolutely! I had my computer wake-up in the middle of the night, update itself and reboot. All of the computers at my work did it the next day. EVERY ONE OF THEM is running XP slower and slower. Didn't this happen to Win98, too? There should be a class action lawsuit.

What Windows means for real people

Every time there is a new release of the Windows OS there is much hype - most of it paid for by Microsoft. I have been a user since before MSDOS came out and lost faith in Microsoft understanding my needs as a user since Vista was launched. XP, with all its damnations, remains the most stable platform for business and personal use, and Microsoft should have seen that as a strength on which to build on. Vista (especially its poor performace and high price) destroyed much of the faith in Microsoft, and the alternatives to Windows 7 will soon demonstrate that a company that loses track of what its customers want and need soon loses their confidence and loyalty...

Windows XP

Just hate to replace printer, scanner, and other programs which wont work with Vista or 7.

L2upgrade

Yea i had to buy another copy of batman i had it on VHS but had to upgrade because of a stupid dvd player I just hate to replace this Perfectly good copy of Batman on VHS

What are you talking about?

It's not an upgrade if nothing is improved.

Windows XP Vs Vista and Win 7

People are still buying new pc's but are opting to stay with Windows XP. This means they are still buying copies of Windows with thier new PC's but are choosing XP rather than Vista. As for Windows 7 changing this I doubt that it will happen for a while as most businesses wont be purchasing it if it doesnt run thier old apps and they will more than likely wait for the 1st service pack to be released. So if you ask me XP is here to stay for at least another couple of years, as people wont be going out in droves to buy Windows 7, not after the problems alot of them had with Windows Vista

Bait and Switch

They are getting us into windows 7, because it has ‘XP mode’; so then when windows 8 comes out. They can remove ‘XP mode’ and finally kill XP. ALSO to answer your question, all SA customers have Windows 7. I know many people who are excusively using it; either because they are SA or they got RTM from a pirated websites.

Dumb

What a retarded assumptions. first XP mode is virtual machine technology. Use it in real-life and tell me its a reason people will go to Win 7. I can use XP mode now on XP / Vista by installing Virtual PC. People are igonorant posters here. Lack of knowledge = dumb post like this.

Notwithstanding the "batter reception"

How can Windows 7 have already gotten a better reception when it is not yet on the market? Perhaps you should reserve that judgement for a few months after it has actually gone to market.

However, the better reception it will likely get may be due in large part to the business version's full compatibility with XP, by actually running XP in a virtual machine. so XP is not dead(or even dying), after all.
