If Microsoft really wants to be friends with Linux...

Microsoft has created a new foundation, the CodePlex Foundation which claims to be about bringing open-source and proprietary software companies together to participate side by side in open-source projects. Yeah. Right.

There's a folk tale that goes something like this.  A dog and a rattlesnake meet at the river. The snake says to the dog, "Why don't you carry me on your back to the other side?" The dog says, "Sure, I'd be happy to do that except you'll bite me." And the snake says, "No I won't. I really need to get across to the other side, and I won't bite you." The dog, a foolish sort, believes the snake's promise so he lets the snake on his back and he starts to swim across the river. At the mid-way point, the snake bites him.  "What did you do that for?" exclaimed the dog, as they both begin to die. "What did you expect," replied the snake, "I'm a rattlesnake."

And, Microsoft is Microsoft. The Codex Foundation claims that it "will complement existing open source foundations and organizations, providing a forum in which best practices and shared understanding can be established by a broad group of participants, both software companies and open source communities." I don't believe it for a minute.

Microsoft doesn't mind stealing from open source, but any deals it makes are only good while there's a clear, short-term benefit to Microsoft. The second that changes, or Ballmer decides to have an anti-open-source fit again, the deal is off.

Besides, just like the snake in the story, Microsoft is more than happy to poison open-source software even as it proclaims that it wants to co-operate with open source. Just off the top of my head there's the revelation that Microsoft's ExpertZone training for Best Buy and other retailers is stuffed with anti-Linux lies.

And, then there's Microsoft's patent attacks on open-source using companies like TomTom and its thwarted efforts to sell anti-Linux patents to a patent troll. According to Jim Zemlin, executive director of the Linux Foundation, "The details are that Microsoft assembled a package of patents 'relating to open source' and put them up for sale to patent trolls. Microsoft thought they were selling them to AST, a group that buys patents, offers licenses to its members, and then resells the patents." What actually happened was that Microsoft ended up selling the patents to the Open Invention Network, a pro-Linux intellectual-property organization.

The irony is that Microsoft is having serious patent troubles of its own with Microsoft Word. You'd think the last thing on earth they'd want to do is help patent trolls, but ... a rattlesnake is a rattlesnake and Microsoft is Microsoft.

If Microsoft really wants to make peace with Linux and compete fairly, they can start by dumping all those vague patent threats against Linux. Microsoft can also stop FUDing about Linux and quietly having its supporters bury anti-Microsoft and pro-Linux stories on Digg and other social networks.

If they did all that ... well frankly I still wouldn't trust them with their current leadership. But, if Ballmer is fired, which isn't a bad idea for reasons having nothing to do with Linux or open source, then maybe I'd believe that this rattlesnake has been milked of its poison. But, for now, only the most foolish of open-source dogs could possibly believe that this snake isn't going to try to kill them.

What People Are Saying

Patents

As long as Microsoft's new open source strategy is NOT
- a means of incorporating Microsoft patents into open source,
- and using the incorporated patents to collect royalties and as result restrict open source usage and growth,
I am 100% in support.

Microsoft and other Corporate contributors must come clean and clearly state that they authorized usage of any patents infringed upon by their open source contributions.

GPLv3 solves this patent problem in paragraph 11.

GPLv2 was written in 1991 before software patents were a significant issue. 1981 was the first key year for software patents in the US.
GPLv2 does not address software patents.

MS FUD - A crying shame

Instead of jumping onto the bashing wagon (the one that bashes MS) I tend to feel sorry, deep down inside my heart. I'm sorry for all those poor souls in the Microsoft camp. I do try to understand their feelings and their ocean deep frustration due to the fact that their beloved system is hanging from the cliffs.

It is never easy for a human being to admit that some one fooled you, and did so for decades. The Microsoft campers seem to begin realizing that fraud and lies don't hold out at the end. It is never easy to admit defeat and failure, not for any human being, whether you're a MS-guy or a penguin-guy.

Being a penguin-guy myself I rarely get involved in the bashing of the other side. My time is too valuable for that. I can assure you that I am not on the same team as FSF all the time - They do tend to be a tad too explosive in my opinion. It's alright to fend for freedom. Only some times it would be nice with a less aggressive tune from their stereo.

Forgive me if you get me wrong and take me for a complete nerd - I'm not nor am I paid by anyone.

Never heard of the dog and the rattlesnake...

I believe the original fable is actually a scorpion and a frog. Half way across the river, after stinging the frog, the frog asks the scorpion why he stung him, to which the scorpion replies: "It is my nature."

I will never trust Microsoft

I will never trust Microsoft with "my best interests".

From Machiavelli's 'The Prince'; Choosing Subordinates, verse 44:

"To enable a prince to form an opinion of a subordinate there is one test which never fails. When you see the subordinate thinking more of his own interests than of yours, and seeking inwardly his own profit in everything, such a man will never turn out well. You will never be able to trust him."

Linux & Microsoft - Tortoise and the hare. ;)

Happy days...

Except in this case, the

Except in this case, the tortoise moves faster than the hare.

Aww, gee

Why would you want to denigrate a nice, cuddly rattlesnake by backhandedly comparing him to Ballmer? The snake is what he is because of nature; Ballmer is what he is because of a studied fascination with greed and megalomania.

But Microsoft has grown beyond the control of an individual and even a board. The hydra's heads now fight each other. Simply put, if Microsoft doesn't embrace Open Source, its days are numbered. Smarter men than Gates or Ballmer, (Larry Ellison, for one, Steve Jobs, for another), have recognized this irresistible tide in their turn. As Microsoft lags, so it is dragged down by its own archaic mindset. The smartest big companies in IT are deeply invested in OSS, IBM, Intel, and down the line.

The dot-com crash bought MS some time to fix Longhorn. Allchin was brought in and did the best he could. The result, Vista, is a masterpiece of mediocrity and still Open Source marches on.

MS stock will briefly bump up on the release of Win 7. Sell then; it will be one of your last chances.

How Much?

How much are the FSF and the Linux Foundation paying all you shills for your anti-Microsoft FUD?

Pot, meet kettle

I bet SJVN is being paid a lot
less that Mega$loth is paying
"Technical Evangelists" like
you. Some people believe in
free choice. Crawl back under
your rock you Orwellian parasite.
People like you are destroying
the US.

Free choice!

The FSF: You're free to choose as long as it's one of our approved choices.

That's not freedom. Try again.

Are you talking about GPL

Are you talking about GPL enforcement?

The FSF may not smile and tell you they love your choice, but they do give you source code and the ability to do what you want as long as you abide by the very liberal licenses + sharing code (tit-for-tat).

Microsoft, meanwhile, provides a very aggressive EULA and a product that is opaque and controlled by them.

Do you see the difference?
