Apple versus Google

Gmail and Google Apps mail Push comes to iPhone

The Active Sync 'end round' that Google used to get calendar and contact sync to work on the iPhone is now being used to get push Gmail.

Google licensed Microsoft's Active Sync so it could sync its messaging services with iPhones and other devices that support Microsoft Exchange (oh the irony!).  however, those with an Exchange account already on their phone won't be able to use this service because the iPhone only supprts one Exchange account.

The service pretends it is an Exchange Server (or acts like one).  Everything you've seen the iPhone do in regard to Exchange Email, Calendar and Contacts can now be done with a Google Apps or Gmail account.

Today, they announced that Mail services are now working.  You can activate Google Push on your iPhone by following the steps on Google's updated help pages.

Just as an aside, it would be nice if Apple supported Google's push email service natively like a few other phones have.
