Microsoft Courier dual screen tablet concept revealed

Last night, at the Gizmodo Gallery in downtown Manhattan, Gizmodo revealed a video of a new concept product from Microsoft.  Dubbed "Courier", the product looks like an entirely new device segment from the world's leading software and operating systems vendor.

Although not a traditional tablet, the device looks to compete with current and upcoming tablets including those from Amazon and Apple. Apple, widely expcted to reveal a tablet in the coming months, will have to compete with the publicity that this concept is generating.

The device has two multi-touch screens that fold together like a book.  When closed it could double as a notebook if it weren't for the devices LED indicators on the side.  Its features also include a 3 megapixel camera, Wifi, headphone jack and it looks to have an inductive charging pad.

The Courier appears somewhat similar to the One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) XO-2, though it is a little smaller.  However instead of being used as a laptop it is meant to be used like a MoleSkine.

Gizmodo promises additional information in the coming days.  The video they posted on their site has some of the details.

What People Are Saying

Microsoft Courier

Needs to be a functional laptop, netbook, eReader, iPod/iTouch, wireless all in one.

I might buy this

Ok, if the dimensions are similar to that alluded to in the video, and the weight, battery life, and price are right, I would buy this.
Don't have a use for a dedicated book-reader (kindle). Laptops tend to be relatively expensive, and then I'd be stuck with a small keyboard and essentially a 'lite' version of my desktop, with the same interface limitations (mouse/keyboard). You can't really crack open a laptop and jot a note while you're walking down the street.
Smartphones are good, but then you get an even -smaller- keyboard, and a screen that can't hold much info at a time.
This thing looks to be the best combination of stuff I might use on the go. Directions, notes, things to keep me organized... Save the gaming and hard number crunching for my desktop.

As for MS or Apple... I couldn't care less about what name is on it.

Does it work? Will it make my life easier? Sold!

MS touch screen

No issues with the split... the cost / power to run two screens will be a concern - as well as the over all production weight. Given the 1987 refresh that MS is doing to the prior Apple product - and the so called "eminent" release of an "iTablet", either MS is channelling Apple RDF ... or they have a good set of spies.

I'd be impressed if MS pulls it off before Apple

I hate the seam between MS' dual screens though.

Or maybe a new player will enter the field and pull it off? You know the MS version will BSOD.

Great demo... OneNote,

Great demo... OneNote, multitouch, tablet etc. capabilities all in one. This looks very promising, and I suspect that Microsoft has the technology base to make it all come together (unlike Apple, which has multitouch, but not any of the other tech in house at this time.)

what tech?

LMFAO. Apple lacks the tech base to assemble a tablet device? What are you smoking, dude?

And while you ascribe great breadth to Microsoft's "technology base," I don't see that the Tablet PC, Zune, or Windows Mobile phone have been particularly successful - particularly not when competing directly against Apple products like the iPod and the iPhone.

More than likely this demo was nothing more than MS's attempt to steal some thunder from Apple before the latter releases a real working tablet. Microsoft is well versed in the use of vaporware as a means to influence & control a market.

Surface - Take 2

This really feels similar to the Surface Table. Apple introduces the iPhone and Microsoft says "oh yeah, we've had multitouch for years," and proceeds to pull out a skunkwork project that is of questionable practical or commercial value. Definitely an interesting technical demonstration, but not a viable product. Similarly, this is an interesting concept, but until there's an actual product with an actual pricetag, it's nothing more than eye candy. I realize the timeline's a bit different. With microsoft presenting a concept before Apple, I suppose it helps to set the bar for expectations, but I don't see anything other than a marketing gamesmanship here.

Very cool!

I envisioned a device almost identical to this, however with more of an eBook application aspect design about 10 years ago. The physical design, two halves, screens, touch interface, et al are identical to what I was hoping would come to market someday. However that was long before Apple kicked off the multi-touch dash with the iPhone OS that is now the yardstick.

A device of this design and size and capabilities would be a perfect college textbook replacement device. Excellent concept, let's just hope that unlike the also great Surface design by MS, that this one comes to market for the masses.
