Because of its business practices, plenty of people have begun to call Apple and Steve Jobs the new Big Brother. And now a software upstart has parodied Apple's famous 1984 ad, with a Jobs lookalike as Big Brother, and his brainwashed drones plugged into iPods.
The ad was made by doubleTwist, which makes software that lets you use iTunes with multiple kinds of devices, not just iPods. In the remade ad, the Jobs Big Brother figure calls out to his minions, "no other choices shall distract from our glory" -- a clear reference to Apple's near monopoly on music players with its iPod. You can see the ad, below.
doubleTwist, of course, wants you to use its software as a way to break the monopoly. The female anime figure that throws an ax and destroys Big Brother wears the company's logo.
This isn't the first time that Apple and doubleTwist have tangled: TechCrunch claims that when doubleTwist put up an ad on a billboard next to Apple's San Francisco Apple story, Apple used its power to have the ad pulled. When the ad went up a second time, the site says, Apple had it pulled again. The ad asked people to "Try The Cure for iPhone Envy."
