Reports of passwords being stolen from thousands of email accounts have been all over the news lately. Assorted files containing email addresses and their passwords have been popping up left and right.
Thomas Springer of SERVERSNIFF.net tracked down the lists of hacked email accounts, put them in a database and made a simple web page front end for queries.
To see if an email account was on the list, go to his Check for compromised mail-account page.
Hotmail and Gmail got the most publicity but, according to Springer, email addresses from AOL, live.com and others are also on the lists. The BBC reports that Comcast and Earthlink users were victimized too.
In theory, the email provider should invalidate stolen passwords, but it can't hurt to check if you are on the list.
