Apple versus Google

New Verizon Droid ad aims at Apple's iPhone

Update: Droid specs and pictures leaked.

You've probably seen the ad, if you were watching sports at all this weekend.  But in case you haven't, I've put it below.  Inconsistent apostrophes included.

This device is widely rumored to be the Motorola Sholes/Tao (pictured below) with an amazing 480 x 854 pixel screen, and it would be the first device running Android 2.0.  This sounds like a great device and some much needed competition for the iPhone ... but there are a few caveats.

The commercial lists some things you can't do with an iPhone and then proceeds to go into future nightmare/Max Headroom mode announcing the "iDon't Droid".

iDon't have a real keyboard

iDon't run simultaneous apps

iDon't take night shots

iDon't allow open development

iDon't customize

iDon't run widgets

iDon't have interchangeable batteries

Everything iDon't

DROID DOES

Most of the things in the list won't matter for most users or are ambiguous at best.

The 5-megapixel camera that takes pictures in the dark is probably closest, except I don't care about megapixels or a LED flash that barely works -- I just want a better lens on my phone.

The batteries: I don't want to carry around an extra battery and if I do need extras I'll just buy an external battery adapter which I bet is less expensive than the replaceable batteries in the Droid.

The real vs. screen keyboard battle has been raging for a long time.  Sure, I'd rather have a real keyboard and some extra screen space while I am typing, but I don't think I'd trade it for having to slide out an extra portion of the phone to do it.  It is a trade-off that I know some people will embrace -- I'll take a wait and see on this one.

As for running apps in the background, I do it currently with a jailbroken iPhone.  For the most part, this isn't necessary and also causes battery and stability issues. For most people this isn't an issue either.

There are a few other revelations in the commercial.   It says the release is on October 30th (if you read the XML of that little alien handwriting on the bottom -via Engadget).

Most interestingly perhaps, Verizon is taking on a handset maker (Apple), itself being a wireless provider.  Yes, this is weird and makes little sense on the surface.

Verizon cripples handsets.
To understand what this really means, you have to look at Verizon's other handsets. Verizon is going to have their fingerprints all over this Droid thing.   For instance, they are notorious for blocking Bluetooth access to devices, only allowing headsets to connect.  They also force their customers to use their own branded VZ Navigator GPS service instead of, for instance, picking their favorite at the Android Catalog.  Photos and videos?  Verizon VCast Video services will probably be your only choice.  They haven't gone public with this information yet, so these are all guesses, but I wouldn't be surprised to see limitations and a big fat walled garden put on this thing.

So I don't think it will be "Open" at all.

And that brings me to one last observation. The iPhone isn't going on Verizon ... neither is any Apple product (tablet?).  Not for the foreseeable future anyway.  This "iDon't" commercial signals the end of that speculation.  So we can all move along now with the knowledge that even though AT&T is a horrific carrier and its service isn't the best, they might just be the best the American marketplace has to offer.

Oh and if "iDon't" does sound familiar, check out this Sega ad from a few years back.  Where is Sega now?  How about Nintendo.

What People Are Saying

sega and android rock my world

Of course this isn't the first time anyone has used the don't/do comparison... were you born in a tent? go and watch a tampon ad, I'm sure they use the same technique...

So, my point was: I love the DroidDoes ad. not because I am pro Android or anti Apple but because it is a full-powered, unashamed assault on a market leader and it shows innovative marketing. I think the real enemy is the carrier... for example, AT&T and the iPhone MMS crippling - Verizon has a huge part to play in the success of this launch... please don't let the next ad by Apple to be 'DroidDoesn't'

I am the Anti-Seth

Oh relax, the user name is just a funny phrase I have heard about iPhone users.

While I will admit, as a Developer who has worked at places that did print and other creative work, I have developed, no pun intended, an acute case of Apple hatred.

With that being said, I have to say I agree with Seth's point about this device some how is going to be completely 'open'. I was interested in creating mobile apps on the side and learning mobile application development for Windows Mobile, however it took me some research to even find a Verizon phone that did not disable the WiFi. If I remember correctly, I think I actually had to wait for a Samsung to come out that had it enabled. Before that, I looked into developing apps for phones on the Verizon handsets only to find you have to pay a hefty license fee to develop under whatever crappy OS they were/are using.

So as far as openness, I too am in wait and see mode. I am not going to upgrade my phone to something where I feel a cold hand on my shoulder when I am developing an app.

Maybe Java on the iPhone?

Maybe that will put some pressure on Apple to support things like Java and Flash? Right now it's like a working with a device 5 years behind the rest of the world in application portability. It's pretty much the IE6 of the mobile world.

flash=crash

Can't speak to Java, but do know that Flash is a creaky, lumbering bag of overhead the world, the net and your mobile device (and your PC) don't need any more than a 640K paging system. Especially with the availability of HTML 5 - which admittedly is an immature spec and for awhile a bit short on tools, but that doesn't have to (and won't) be true for long.

Flash is inefficient, was never designed for video and nosed under the tent because it got established by an aggressive Adobe as the ad banner and crude animation standard.

Google's readiness to convert all their videos to H.264 - and some companies' moves away from Flash in their corporate systems are further indicators. Once a fair number of developers began to bypass the flash for leaner, cleaner solutions, I'm hoping the handwriting will be on the wall.

Personally, not only are all the duns to separately upgrade the thing every ten minutes a drag, since a recent update I only get Flash on IE and not FireFox, Chrome or Opera. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling to no avail.

Flash is also cited as a frequent cause of browser crash, tho' I'm no expert.

So Apple using its mind share to begin to move the world away from this past-its-prime bag o'code is welcome to me.

Java is the big one

The mobile Java support is the big one. Flash is secondary one prevented by Apple for the same reason as Java. They want people paying them money rather than being compatible with the rest of the world.

iDon't take night shots

I heard that the thermal imaging system they're using so you can take night shots is supposed to be amazing.

Service counts more than some features

The flip side of the argument that "Android phones aren't as much competition for the iPhone as alleged, because the things Android phones do better, are done only a little better, or aren't that important", is that even if the two phones were equivalent, it seems a lot of people will choose Verizon's Droid over ATT's/Apple's iPhone, because Verizon's service is much better in many areas. Droid users would be getting a phone that's somewhat better in a few features, about the same in other features, and a little worse in other features, but substantially better service in many areas, which is mainly what people buy a phone and service for--not as much for the ability to run non-Internet apps, play movies, etc. Not a hard decision for many people not wedded to Apple.

You know things are bad

You know things are bad when people start telling us how wonderful a phone is that isn't even released yet just because it isn't from Apple. I guess when you have an allergy to Apple everything else looks like an iPhone killer.

How much is Apple paying you

How much is Apple paying you on the side? I have an iPhone and it has a ton of shortcomings.
