Shark Tank

Your tax dollars at work

This pilot fish works for a federal agency at a remote site, supporting a handful of users for whatever they need in the IT line.

"The Washington, D.C., office wanted a digital photo of one of our users, which our administrative assistant e-mailed off, asking if the picture she attached would do," says fish.

"D.C. responded that, yes, that's the picture they need. But it has to be sent in on a CD.

"I got that e-mail forwarded to me, asking me to burn the picture to a disk. It actually originated from D.C., so I'm now burning a CD of a file returned from D.C. via e-mail, to be sent overnight FedEx.

"I honestly thought about calling the D.C. person, having her put in a blank disk and remotely burning it from her computer, or having my boss who works down the hall from her burn it and drop it off. But in the end it's just easier to waste money and not make waves."

Sharky doesn't want your true tale of IT life on a CD -- just e-mail it to me at sharky@computerworld.com. You'll snag a snazzy Shark shirt if I use it. Add your comments below, and read some great old tales in the Sharkives.

What People Are Saying

tax dollars

I work for a local government entity and I am a tax payer in this area as well. I try to keep an eye and be frugal with the money that I need to spend on supplies and equipment. I look for the best bargain I can get. I am galled by other employees who don't live in this town and they think that the funds are unlimited. I know I can't change them, but it still ticks me off that my tax dollars are being spent in such a wasteful manner. But then again the problem is top down. The local elected officials see nothing in spending money on cost assessments studies for developing property and then they decide that they want to build somewhere else so they need another cost assessment study done.

tax dollars

Local governments apparently have no sense of fiscal responsibility. Approximately 40 years ago, the city I grew up in changed four downtown streets to one way, alternating east and west travel. Since then, various city councils have ordered no less than 23 studies to consider making the streets two way streets again, OR leaving the streets one way still, but reversing the traffic flow on those same streets. And they have YET to reach a decision. Each study manages to cost in excess of $100,000... so the city government has wasted over $2,000,000 on studies that have shelved along with all the other studies they've done.

Gone is privacy/ownership, and so goes liberty.

So not one comment yet about how DC requested a photo of an employee, and an assistant gets one, [without the person's consent?], and sends it?

No information from DC on how the picture is going to be used, stored, and who has access to it? Just give us the picture.

No form for the person to sign and consent?
No choice for the person as to whether their image is given?

Oh, lighten up

This is supposed to a humorous story. Why do you need to know all the other stuff that would detract from a simply story.

Lighten up!

Government Oppression

Again the government is trying to control what we do and how we do it. This is a problem of big government and we are all going to die. WHAAAAAAAAAA

PhotoOp

This is just another example of Obama's attempts to monitor all government employees and turn us into a communist state!!!

I'm a state worker, and I'd never do that!

As a state employee I would never be willing to spend the state's money in a way that I wouldn't be willing to spend my own. If someone asked me to waste money on FedEx as was described in this posting, I would have made use of a simple work-around. After all, I'm a tax-payer too - the money wasted is mine!

BTW, 99.999% of state employees are hard-working and dedicated. We are committed to doing our jobs well, even though we earn very modest salaries and never get bonuses... can you say the same thing of the Wall Street bankers??

The best politicians

I believe that we have the best politicians that money can buy.

Ripoff

I want my money back!
