Shark Tank

Never underestimate the power of one rule

Pilot fish gets a call from a client with a week-old PC -- and he's in a panic.

"When I delivered the new machine to him, I told him that he should refrain from turning his computer on and off too many times during the day," says fish. "I said two or three times would be OK."

Now the newbie user is telling fish that he can't plug in the mouse and keyboard, and he needs to answer an important e-mail that has just arrived.

Fish doesn't get it. After all, the PS/2 connectors on the mouse and keyboard will only go in one way. How hard can reconnecting them be? And anyway, how does the client know this time-critical e-mail is there if the PC is turned off?

It turns out that the client's new computer desk has just arrived. But he has remembered fish's admonition, and he knows he's already turned the PC off three times that day.

So instead of turning it off again, he's called in two friends -- one to hold up the PC, and the other to help the client move the computer desk into place.

"But that's not the end of it," fish groans. "Because the keyboard and mouse kept falling down, they decided to unplug them until they completed the desk switch.

"As for why they weren't able to plug them back in: They didn't know how these PS/2 connectors are foolproof. So they pushed and pushed them until some of the pins bent over."

What People Are Saying

Power cycles actually can be an issue...

As I understand it, modern electronics tend to fail like lightbulbs -- it's turning them on and off that puts the wear-and-tear on them. Of course, power usage is a competing cost!

And then there's the issue of needing the system to stay on overnight for remote backups, updates, and the like....

Foolproof HA HA

I was once told "You can never make anything fool because fools are ingenious"

New Models

The minute you create ANYTHING that's "Foolproof", you can BET, they'll come out with a "New and Improved" model, of "Fool", that will easily find a way, to screw things up!!!

Memories

A long, long time ago when users had terminals with burnouts or even simple PCs with power problems, etc we gave them buffered "power strips" to turn the terminals/PCs off (the power switches on those are not very reliable") - so, someone (in accounting?) figured that turning the controllers dimmed all the terminals (i.e. must work) and started turning the controllers off! They (the controllers) are even less reliable for many on/off cycles so - we had thousands and they started failing all over but that's the company policy now? So what, losing time, money (a lot!) and not really saving in electricity and fixing them, the policy wins!

Accelerate to today (government installation), lots and lots of ethernet cables, some traffic on those cables even the system is idle so to save some "electricity" - the solution, disconnect the cables to save. We all know what then - worn out connectors, wrong sockets connected to wrong cables, "keep alives" not flowing between clusters, nodes, etc. A real mess after a while, of course usually Saturday night when the system was supposed to come up again.

So, the users, be it an individual or an whole IT department(!) should be forbidden to make (any?) decisions until they fully understand (and dream on) what's going on.

Had a similar experience

Had a similar experience with a friend. She tried to plug her ps/2 mouse in and it wouldn't work so she kept pushing and pushing until all of the pins were bent. She didn't stop to think that it it didn't go in easily, maybe she should try twisting it so that the pins lined up.

Where's MH?

Hi gang,

I'm experiencing a "perfect storm" (that's just a figure of speech ...) of both work and home issues that is eating up my Shark Tank time. So, don't worry, I'll be back soon.

- MH

nah, don't think its perfect unless there's a galactic storm too

we are on our 4th? 5th? storm. rain which keeps on falling and falling for hours, high winds, floods.

plus the greatest enemy of IT: no electricity at storm peak.

there's a few people in this planet who still don't believe there's global warming.

i believe mad bad bear box would love to tie them to a post during these storms.

Stormy

"there's[sic] a few people in[sic] this planet who still don't believe there's global warming."

There has been global warming and cooling numerous times on this planet. We are currently cooling, though there can be localized warming with it. However, that doesn't mean the climate changes are induced by human activities. The two issues are distinct.

reCAPTCHA: kins The trouble with families....

Distinction

I don't think they are distinct. NASA has nighttime satellite photos of our planet. Human habitation can be seen from the lights, covering wide areas of the planet.

The full acceptance of this responsibility is difficult. I know to honor this relation then I must not use my car, stop smoking, look over my activities which may unduly release carbon dioxide and too much heat. Worse, it means I may not spend too much time playing computer games due to the heat generated by the power supply, processor and graphics card.

I am sure I am not alone in not wanting to change this lifestyle, in accepting the fact that we are adding to the global warming. At least my Japanese car is fuel efficient...

maybe it's just me
