Shark Tank

What could be simpler?

Pilot fish at this government lab is called in because some users just aren't following the rules.

"I was asked to help investigate the root cause for a continuing failure," fish says. "Remotely located team members were not successfully complying with the requirements of what I personally found to be a rather contorted procedure.

"Interviews with headquarters staff indicated a conviction that all failures were due entirely to the negligence of the remote staff to simply adhere to a procedure of impeccable clarity.

"The basis for their overwhelming confidence in the quality of the procedure: 'Because we wrote it.'"

What People Are Saying

accident or on purpose

When I looked at the Tank, one of the "related posts" was "HP to buy 3Com for $2.7B". I wonder if the relationship is an attempt at humor by someone, or a happenstance of wording, but it sure struck me as funny.

captcha - devoted veal - sheep that like the idea of turkey for thanksgiving, or maybe sheep that got voted out of office - that explains a lot of modern day politics!

You see mud I see clear water

Every document, email, and procedure is always crystal clear to the people who write them. Unfortuantely it can look like mud to everyone else. When I wrote procedures I always had the intended audiance read it first to see if they understood it. It's amazing how changing a word or a phrase can make something clearer to someone else.

"...always crystal clear to the people who write them."

The quote in the subject line is precisely why that vast majority of documentation is only read by one person: the person who wrote it. Documentation is highly overrated; especially so if only one person reads it.

Failures

This guy doesn't know what he's talking about. Obviously the problems were due to the fact that they aren't using Windows 7. Windows 7 will prevent all kinds of problems no matter how stupid the users are and how bad the procedures are.

Boy the stories really are getting bad. Maybe I should send in the stories my dentist was telling me yesterday. No wait they're actually the reason I don't like going to that dentist.

The rules are in place
And there are no exceptions

A great procedure
So long it must be correct
Of course it's ignored

Looks like CW ran out of shirts and is posting submissions from the anonymotti.

Well then

I just love to get contorted into several positions with young fellows. I once wrapped my ankles behind my head...oh you should have seen how happy that growing young guy was. He showed me his remote staff and I helped him and his tema members.
