Seeing Through Windows

Microsoft's Bing market share jump: Too little, too late

Microsoft has good reason to be pleased with recent figures that show Bing has a nearly 10% share of the search market, nearly 31% higher than a year previous. But it still lags far behind Google, which has 65.4% of the market. If the goal is to catch Google, it will never happen.

Bing's share of the search market was 9.9% in October, up from 9.4% in September, reports ComScore. Back in May, it was at 8%. That translates into nearly a 25% increase in five months. The increase is even more impressive when you consider that until May, Microsoft's market share was heading south. It was 8.5% in January, slid to 8% in May, and has rebounded since then, largely because of the launch of Bing, Microsoft's redesigned search.

Bing is an impressive piece of work. It's fast, does an excellent job of finding the best search matches, and includes some very nifty features. If Bing and Google started off with equal market share, I think their market share would stay neck and neck. Bing is that good.

But they're not starting off neck and neck. Bing was released in June, and at that point, it had an 8.4% market share, compared to Google's 65%. Since June, Bing has gone to 9.9%, while Google has been largely flat, and in October had a 65.4% market share. Bing appears to be taking market share away from Yahoo, which fell to 18% in October, from 18.8% in September. Back in January, Yahoo was at 21%.

Google's lead is simply too large for Bing, and Microsoft will never catch up. But Microsoft doesn't necessarily need to catch Google in order to succeed with Bing. The search market is very large and very profitable, and even taking a relatively small slice means a substantial amount of revenue.

What People Are Saying

Plz....Don't be such

Plz....Don't be such pessimist!!!
Its not an article its your frustration and slander..I am not MS fan But You seem to be a deep seated MS hater..

I have no real proof, but I

I have no real proof, but I am POSITIVE that Google manipulates it's search results to favor the political left. If you think about it, it's just too easy and too tempting for the little twerps running that company.

Marketshare

You know, Bing has more Marketshare in the search market than Apple does in the computer market. Zune, last time I checked, had the same marketshare in the PMP market as Apple in the computer market. So, if low marketshare when facing a behemoth is cause for such articles, why isn't Apple being called a failure in the computer market? I'm just saying? They are great products and people will have preferance. Google is a household name, it's a verb in the Dictionary, they are absolutely on top now and for the foreseeable future. That, however, is always subject to change.

Search... smirch...

I just can't figure out why I should care who has the "lead" in search. When Google was better, I used it. When each new engine came along, I tried it.

When Bing came along, I tried it, and liked it. Now I use it about 85% of the time, I would guess... So what?

Competition is good. But ultimately, I couldn't give a wet slab who "wins". If Google gets suddenly better, maybe I'll go back to it.

I do know that Microsoft needs Bing to succeed far less than Google needs Google search to stay on top. It is the only thing that makes them money.

hee hee

When I ask someone a question and they say "I'll Bing it" I can't help but chuckle. It sounds so dirty.

Competition is good

Competition for Search, Web Browser, OS market share is good for all of us. If one company dominates, the product stagnates. The giants of the tech world need to be looking over their shoulder at the competition that is nipping at their heels.

Bing is a good example of a product designed as a direct challenge to the market leader. I am sure Google is not sitting idle. Mozilla Firefox has the same effect on Microsoft Internet Explorer. Advances with the Mac OS and Linux distributions are pushing Microsoft to innovate with Windows 7.

Hey Preston... Look at the gains Firefox has made - Never Say Never!!

And yet Apple's growth is much slower, marketshare muc smaller..

But the comparison between Apple and Microsoft is in nearly every OS marketshare discussion, always talking about Apple's "growing marketshare." When will we see the "Apple's market share jump: Too little, too late" article?

I wonder...

...how many people use Bing because it's what IE is set to use, and for no other reason? (sigh) Advantage MS.

I entirely agree

I just bought a new laptop for my teenage son. He was forced to get a Windows 7 machine because we couldn't find him a Linux laptop for sale with full sized keys on the keyboard. Oh well, back to the world of insecure operating systems, I guess.

He was so mad that he couldn't figure out how to get that "Bing" search box in the upper right of Internet Explorer replaced with "Google". I figured out how to turn off the search box entirely, but Microsoft has hidden the help needed to select your own preferred search tool entirely in Windows 7.

seriously how dump can you

seriously how dump can you be if you cant figure out how to make google the default search in IE.. u click on the search box drop down >> manage >> select google as defaut.

also when u first start IE there is a wizard that lets u choose the default, but i guess u cant read.
