The Security Sector

It's mandatory for every OS!

The holidays are once again upon us. And every year I'm asked by various friends and family what kind of computer they should buy. Being an Apple fan, I always direct them to the Apple product line. Yes, they are a bit more expensive than their PC brethren but to me they are worth the extra cost. Before anybody jumps on reliability issues, I've seen hardware problems on both sides of the PC/Mac war. But hardware aside, at the core of every Apple lies OS X which was designed by Apple to work flawlessly and seamlessly with its hardware. Now in its sixth incarnation (called Snow Leopard) this OS (like fine wine) has only gotten better with age. Is it perfect? Well, not by a long shot...but I'd still take it over EVERY other OS out there.

New Mac users need to understand that just because there aren't any Mac viruses around doesn't mean they can run bare. Clam Xav has been keeping my laptop secure for years and my Mac Mini is running PC Tools iAntiVirus to keep it protected from any malware sneaking through. Since both of the aforementioned products are offered for free, there are no excuses. While PC Tools free version is mainly for non-commercial (i.e. home, personal) use, they also offer two other pay options for business or for those who want phone/technical support.

What People Are Saying

Apple $hill

This blogger reminds of the the Senators that are letting Big Insurance stuff cash into their pockets to vote against health care reform.

If you want security and reliability at a reasonable cost (free) use Linux on any PC. Why pay outrageous prices for Mac hardware?

Not shilling, chillin'

Most average computer users don't even know what Linux is, even if they've heard of it. Some of my PC friends don't even know how to Cut, Copy, and Paste. They only go for PCs because of the cost and because their son or brother-in-law makes fun of Macs. Then they whine to me when they get crippled by viruses or malware or can't figure out drivers. I know one guy who lost three weeks of productivity over the last two years yet insisted that I'd paid too much for my Mac. Gee, I said, you're so much smarter than me to save all that money and lose three weeks of productivity.

Linux Shill

I laugh at your Linux OS. Linux just got pwned by Google.

As for Windows...

As for Windows, my understanding is that most virus problems are caused by people who either don't have antivirus software, or who have allowed their antivirus software to expire.

I have been using Microsoft operating systems since the pre-Windows days of DOS, and have never had a successful virus/worm/trojan/spyware attack against any of my systems. All it took was current antivirus software, an updated operating system and applications, and a little common sense. Common sense is a big factor - people download the darndest things. (grin)
