IT spending is starting to look rosy, in large part because corporations like what they see in Windows 7, says a market research firm. This must make Microsoft feel like it's the good old days --- whenever a new version of Windows shipped, PC sales spiked.
Researcher Adam Golub said on the blog of the market research firm ChangeWave that the strongest growth rate in IT spending in two years is being driven by enterprise satisfaction with Windows 7. He notes:
Regarding PCs, the release of the Windows 7 operating system is the key factor driving growth. Nearly three-in-four (73%) of the 1,753 corporate IT buyers say their company will be buying Laptops and 69% Desktops in the 1st Quarter -- the highest levels for both since February 2008.
While previous ChangeWave surveys found companies deferring their PC purchases in anticipation of Windows 7, the latest results show the opposite now occurring. Nearly one-in-five (19%) say Windows 7 is causing their company's normal upgrade cycle to accelerate.
That's just the beginning of the good news for Microsoft. It appears that Windows 7 will also drive enterprises to purchase other Microsoft software. Computerworld notes that
Because of Windows 7, [Microsoft] will be one of the big beneficiaries of...increased spending, said ChangeWave. More than a quarter of those polled (26%) said that their company plans to boost its spending on Microsoft products in the next quarter, up from just 16% in August and 10% last February.
All in all, this is one of the nicer holiday gifts Microsoft has received in some time.
