New Apple iPhone 4 has twice the memory. Shiny!

Thanks for the memory, Steve Jobs. Eagle-eyed bloggers have noticed that the new Apple iPhone 4 will have 512 MB of RAM: double or quadruple the amount in previous iPhones (and double that in the iPad). In IT Blogwatch, fanbois count their blessings.

Arnold Kim breaks the story:

Apple has never advertised or even published the processor speed or amount of RAM ... trying to shield customers from these technical distractions ... to focus on overall functionality. ... The original iPhone and iPhone 3G contained 128MB ... iPhone 3GS was boosted to 256MB ... iPad contains 256MB.
...
We have since heard that the upcoming iPhone 4's RAM has again been upgraded. ... Apple confirmed this 512MB figure during one of the WWDC sessions. ... The added RAM should help overall performance and multi-tasking.

 
Vladislav Savov verifies (but trusts):

We've heard similar rumblings from reliable sources of our own. ... iPhone 4 users can look forward to not only the same processor ... as their iPad compatriots, but also double the memory allowance.

This will hardly be the first handset to offer half a gig for the OS to dance inside ... at least Apple's keeping up with the times. Wouldn't wanna disappoint all those pre-orderers now, would we?

Kelly Hodgkins offers a salutary lesson:

The iPhone 4 was presumed to [have] 256MB ... a teardown analysis of a leaked prototype uncovered a 256MB DRAM from Samsung. Prototypes may provide a glimpse ... but their specs are not always written in stone.

MG Siegler sourly notes:

It’s interesting that Apple refuses to state anywhere how much RAM is included. ... Seriously, look at the tech specs page, it’s nowhere. I agree that these specifics matter less and less to most consumers ... and can be misleading.

I asked Apple specifically about ... RAM at WWDC and two different employees refused to say.

Cyril Kowaliski reminds us of a couple of things:

Apple confirmed the figure [at the] Worldwide Developers Conference. (No, the conference isn't just a highly mediatized platform for Steve Jobs keynotes.)
 
To add insult to injury, iPad users will have to wait until the fall to enjoy multitasking. ... Too bad competitors are still scrambling to get rival slate devices ready ... the first-gen iPad isn't looking like such a great buy right now.

iPad 2 will probably be great.... can't wait!
