Ladies and gentlemen, the taste of Froyo may finally be upon us.
Some Nexus One users started receiving Google's Android 2.2 upgrade over-the-air on their devices Wednesday night. Gauging by users' reports, the updates appear to be hitting phones in various parts of America, on both T-Mobile and AT&T. I can confirm that users who were not part of the original Nexus One Froyo test group and were not using rooted devices have received the software; their phones were upgraded directly from stock Android 2.1 to Android 2.2 as a result of the update.
A representative from Google's Android team was unable to share any additional information about the nature of the update or the scope of its release.
NEW INFORMATION: See "Yes, Google started rolling out Froyo. Here's the proof"
If this is actually the final version of Froyo, the start of a widespread Android 2.2 rollout may not be far behind. Remember, though, over-the-air updates usually take several days or more to complete, as they're typically staggered with only a subset of users receiving the software each day. Even just the Nexus One portion of the rollout could take some time to fully wrap up.
So what's next? The Motorola Droid was long expected to be second in line for Froyo. At this week's Verizon Droid X launch, execs hinted that both the original Droid and the new Droid X would receive the 2.2 update around the same date, sometime in the "latter half of the summer."
Further clues come from the crew at Android Central, who got their hands on some alleged screenshots from Verizon's computer system. The screenshots list the original Droid as being scheduled to get Froyo within the month of July, and the Droid X as being scheduled only vaguely for "late summer." An alternate screenshot posted at droidforums.net has the original Droid down for late July and the Droid X down for late August. Interpret as you will.
As for other Android phones, I've just updated our Android 2.2 upgrade list with new information on several devices. The Motorola Milestone, for example, has officially been added into the "yay" column. The Samsung Galaxy S and the Dell Streak are among the other Android phones also now confirmed for Froyo. Keep your eyes on the list for any future updates; I'll add further details to that page as new device-specific info becomes available.
Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go eat some frozen yogurt while listening to Pink Floyd's "Wish You Were Here." Anyone care to join me?
