iPhone jailbreakers are at each others' throats and trading insults. The hacker-developers are bickering over who should release their Apple jailbreak tool. The long-awaited magic is ready to download, but it's not exactly what we expected: it's limera1n doing the jailbreaking, not greenpois0n. Now we can jailbreak almost any iDevice -- on any recent version of iOS... including 4.1. Today you can unencumber yourself from Steve Jobs' reality-distorting control over your iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPad, and iPod Touch (3G or 4G). But where did this unexpected twist come from? Find out in The Long View...
But, oh dear, what a difference a couple of days make.
It was only July when George "geohot" Hotz flounced off in a huff, saying that he wasn't going to help people jailbreak any more. However, he re-emerged on the scene late last week, showing off his new jailbreak tool, limera1n.
It's tempting to conclude he felt jealous of the attention heaped on the new guys on the block, but who knows the reality. That's not important right now.
Anyway, after much debate, the Chronic Dev-Team decided not to release their greenpois0n jailbreak tool today. To cut a long story short, they decided not to show their hand to Apple.
In other words, they reasoned that, once geohot had released his jailbreak, Apple would analyze it to determine what the vulnerability was. The company would then try to close the hole. Better to show Apple only one exploit, and keep SHAtter for later.
Also, geohot's jailbreak had the advantage of working with a wider range of iDevices -- including the iPhone 3GS, which SHAtter didn't touch.
All that said, my advice to would-be jailbreakers remains the same: wait a few days and allow the bleeding-edge jockeys work out all the wrinkles.
