Got a Droid X? Get ready to feast on some freshly made Gingerbread.
Verizon Wireless has just confirmed that the Android 2.3 upgrade will become available to Droid X owners this Friday, May 27. The upgrade includes speed improvements, better Android battery life, and a refreshed user interface, among other new features and improvements. (For a full rundown of what's new in Android 2.3, check out my Android Gingerbread FAQ.)
According to Verizon's Droid X Software Update page, you'll be able to manually install the update by looking in the "System Updates" section of your phone's "About Phone" settings menu. Once the update is available, you should see a "Download" link there that'll initiate the upgrade process.
Alternatively, if you don't start the download on your own, the upgrade will automatically be sent to you over-the-air at some point in the coming days. A notification will pop up on your phone prompting you to start the installation.
[UPDATE: A Verizon employee posting in the carrier's official forums says the manual download will be available only starting June 1; until then, the upgrade will be sent out the standard way: in waves, with a subset of users receiving the software each day. This means it may take several days for the update to reach everyone.]
It was just two days ago that we heard official word from Motorola that the Droid X would be jumping on the Gingerbread bandwagon. Moto also said the Droid 2, Droid 2 Global, and Droid Pro were all confirmed for 2.3 upgrades. Those phones are scheduled to receive the Gingerbread software sometime "before the end of the third quarter or sooner."
Remember, you can get the latest Gingerbread status for any Android phone at my Android 2.3 upgrade list. It's always kept up-to-date with the most current info available.
