InfiniBand to Web 2.0: Do ya think I'm sexy?

InfiniBand, sexy? It and other high-speed server interconnect technologies, until now used mostly in high-performance compute clusters and in the back offices of financial services businesses, are starting to get traction in those gigantic Web 2.0 data centers says Eyal Waldman, CEO of Mellanox.

If he's right, the vendor of InfiniBand- and Ethernet-based high-speed interconnect technologies should be well positioned to profit.

"The majority of Web 2.0 businesses are playing with InfiniBand and several have already adopted it," he says, because the processors in those massive Web 2.0 compute farms can't get data fast enough. "We've gotten to the point where the limiting factor is the pipe that's feeding the engine," he says.
