"Spam is up!" "Spam is down!" Who's right?

Spam! (freezelight@Flickr) Two recently released sets of statistics about spam make very different reading. One says spam levels have fallen to historic lows; one says spam is growing faster than ever. They can't both be right-- or perhaps they can, as we'll see in The Long View...

My journey all started with a tweet from CAUCE, the Canadian non-profit anti-spam advocacy group:

Who's right? "64 bln fewer spam mails per month" - Microsoft ... "89% Percent Spam Increase" - eleven

In fact, they're both right, but they're measuring different things. Which in part says something interesting about botnet takedowns and PR offensives.
