Seeing Through Windows

A first look at the Windows 7 Taskbar

One of Windows 7's niftier new features is an improved Taskbar, but it wasn't included in the pre-beta build of the operating system just distributed at the PDC. I've got a video of it in action, though, as well as a secret way to turn on new Taskbar-like features in the existing pre-beta.

The video, taken by neowin.net, shows off many of the Taskbar's new features, such as displaying all running windows of an application running in side-by-side thumbnails, which are actually live. You can see it in action, below.

If you're looking to unlock the new Taskbar the blog Rafael within Windows has instructions on how to do it.

Keep in mind, though, that what it unlocks isn't truly the real thing. It lacks some crucial features and isn't the final design. Still, if you're willing to do some system changes, you might want to check it out. Be forewarned, though, that there's no way to know what it might do to your system stability.

What People Are Saying

Effects copied from Compiz, UI from KDE

Totally agreed with the first comment, this is basically a KDE 4.1 interface copy with some additional effects copied from the Compiz Fusion project such as large format window previews fading in and out on rollover. Nothing new or innovative at all in this video.

Amazing

They managed to copy mostly KDE from Linux, AND a bit from the mac interface.

They can steal from apple all they want, but making their interface look pretty much just like KDE? I think they realized that Linux had something better :)

I don't even like the KDE interface so they won't attract my business anyways :P
