Apple versus Google

Corey Carson at AFP548 has posted AD-OD and Leopard Server guides

If you are at all involved with Apple server or backend technology, you should bookmark AFP548. For the uninitiated, AFP548 stands for Apple Filing Protocol - which is on TCP/IP port 548. It is an Apple thing.

I realize I probably dropped a lot of readers there but for good reason. This site is strictly for Apple IT administrators.

Yesterday, Corey Carson posted two excellent guides in areas that people new to the OSX Server landscape will appreciate.

For first time Leopard Server users, he's posted a Leopard Server Quickstart Guide. Its stated purpose is to:

...get you up and running quickly, overcoming common hurdles such as DNS and binding confusions. With the move to launchd over cron, those steps are now included as well.

Grab it in our downloads section here.

For Admins with an Active Directory that would like to integrate an Apple Open Directory while keeping the Microsoft Directory, Carson has come up with:

AD-OD Sandbox

There are plenty of online articles, whitepapers, and listserve archives that talk about Active Directory and Open Directory integration, but there hasn’t been one document that graphically walked people through the steps of setting up Active Directory from scratch and then tying Mac OS X and Mac OS X Server into that. Hopefully this document will help people get a sandbox environment up and running in less than a few hours and eliminate frustrating snags and confusing steps that are missing from most guides out there today.

As an Apple IT Administrator, I often find myself searching through their forums for answers that people who do similar work on Apple hardware come up with. Although this is a relatively small community, the numbers are growing and information is getting much more thorough.
