Another HP/Microsoft ad, another fail

If I am going to be labeled a fanboy I am going to take it all the way, baby!  The latest Microsoft ad is more of the same.  It is squarely aimed at people who don't know technology and what makes a sound machine.  There are plenty of good PCs out there, but the ones they are trying to sell in these ads aren't them.

By the way, it looks like they did the shooting in the Escondido Fry's Electronics - which is awesome. I love Fry's.  Not because the people in there know anything about technology, but because they have a department store full of electronics and such interesting themes.  If you haven't been there, take off some time your next trip to California to visit one.

The Commercial: "Portability, Battery and Power"

OK, back to why this is a bad advertisement for consumers.  That PC, the HP HDX 16t is misleadingly poor in a number of areas:

1. About Macs, he says:

This [Unibody MacBook] is soooo sexy, but Macs to me are about aesthetics more than they are the computing power. I don't want to pay for the brand. I want to pay for the computer.

Tired stereotypes ... but I'll play.  That PC is a big piece of plastic.  Not sure how this is supposed to persuade me to buy a PC.

2. He wants a "portable" but ends up with a 16-inch display.  At 7.06 lbs, that fits more into the "luggable" category.

Laptop Magazine said:

The HDX 16 is a pain to lug around.

Latop Logic said:

The HDX16 is not small, weighing in at 7.3 pounds and with dimensions of 14.9 x 10.0 x 1.7 inches. Still, it is small enough to fit into standard laptop bags without issue, and light enough that you can lift it and move it around if you need to, although you won’t want to much.

3. That 16 inch display has about the same resolution (1366x768) as a 13-inch MacBook (1280x800).  You can get a 12-inch Lenovo Thinkpad with this resolution screen. Or a Pocket sized Sony P with better resolution.  Those extra inches are just fluff.

For another $175 he could upgrade to a true 1080P HD screen.  It would be a no-brainer to do so - except it wouldn't meet the cost requirements.

4. "Battery":  The standard 6 cell battery is less than mediocre.  It is, again, rated at under three hours.  That is low for a $1000 laptop.  Again, Laptop Magazine said:

The six-cell battery lasted 1 hour and 59 minutes on the LAPTOP Battery Test (continuous Web surfing over Wi-Fi). That’s about an hour and a half short for a mainstream notebook.

5. Video card? A very solid 512 mb NVIDIA GForce M GT.  That's the same card as Apple's MacBook Pro.  Except the HP's 1366x768 screen hardly needs it.  That is also why the battery dies so quickly.  This is an example of an over-specced hardware.

6. Good news! It has a BluRay ROM.  Bad news: Your screen is too small to support BluRay resolution, without the $175 upgrade (again, no brainer).

This is, again, Microsoft misleading the public about a machine that has some good specs but falls way short on things that people need everyday.  Apple's computers aren't perfect, but you absolutely know that they've been built to perform well all around.

At the beginning, this guy said he wanted "Portability, Battery and Power".

He got a 16-inch laptop that isn't considered very portable to say the least.  It has the same processor as an entry level MacBook.  The battery is substandard to other laptops in its class.  He got none of what he wanted.

Congratulations G.  You are a PC.

If you want a thinner, faster PC with a better battery and screen for less, Amazon has a Sony Vaio that I've heard very good things about.  It also has Vista Premium instead of Home and looks much better.

What People Are Saying

Apple Macbooks are

Apple Macbooks are overpriced underspeced sexy machines though i own last years macbookpro
i must say it was a complete waste of money
there r serious compatibility issues with the mac os too forget games even cad n revit dont work.
the 2009 macbook pro costs 2799$ for that dough u could get almost 2 dell xps 16 (1499$) laptops that peform just as well if not better in 3d mark( peformance rating software)a blue ray drive an edge to edge 16' screen with full 1080p resolution and u get vista too add kasparsky internet security to it for 39$ and uve got total security and the universal compatibility of windows too..

for all ppl out there getting a mac for actual productive use .... Dont get it there are cheaper alternative or better alternatives for the same price Asus ,HP ,Dell all provide much better laptops and notebooks for lesser some are just as sexy too.... lol

Concur

From an ad perspective, the central Mac message is "mac is more expensive" with a secondary Mac message of "macs are sexy" (prefer 'great industrial design' but ok).

But what I took away... Windows is only better than a Mac if I am getting it for free.

So I will concede, a free Windows PC is better than a Mac I have to pay for... But given the propensity for viruses on Windows, I would say that the Windows PC is only free if your time is worthless.

(If anyone thinks this PC buyer could have been on this ad buying a Mac over Windows, they are delusional.)

Yeah, not so much

For the record, I am a Unix Fanboy.

Macs suck. Plain and simple. Get over it. Let's see: Gaming compatibility is horrible, compatibility with everything overall is horrible. Yes, it is easy to use, but if I want something to hold my hand, I would get a set top box. Computers are not easy to use. TOYS are easy to use. Get over your it.

You only say Mac is better than PC because you were dumb enough to buy it and now want to justify that you made a sound purchase, when in reality, you know you paid for a brand. You should have gotten an Alienware instead if you are buying based on brand. Ease of use on a Mac? That is not what a computer is for. If you do video editting, music making, I will say straight out that the SOFTWARE for the mac is great. That is about it with the Mac. It is not my fault you made a bad purchase (expensive one at that) and now think that you have the best OS out there.

Do you want reasons instead of calling me a troll?

He looked like a dude in his mid to late 20's, so chances are, if he is shopping on a budget, he is not going to go all out and get blu ray movies. He will not start up a blu ray collection. If he had that kind of money, he would not be shopping on a budget. Hmm, OP forgot to mention that little portion. Maybe it was to help his argument. Using blu ray as an argument = fail. He would not use blu ray. Sure, maybe one or two movies, but nobody shopping for a pc on a budget is going to be dropping $30+ on blu ray movies. He would get dvd's and call it a day.

It has a blu ray drive he will never use. He should have even tried to get some kind of downgraded version.

Power, yes, that thing is a power hog.

Portable, technically, yes it is. It is not like he bought a desktop.

Now for you mac lovers, taste this one: If he wanted truly lightweight, portable, battery power, and cheap, he could have gotten one of those little $300 solid state ASUS Linux laptops. That would have truly been everything all in one. It would have had just as good of games as a Mac except for Diner Dash and Polar Bear bowling which you can also play flash versions of for free online (wait, that would mean same game compatibility).

Now if this guy was getting this for video editting or music making, he would have already known about Mac and purchased one, since we know that Mac dominates in that field.

Since he never mentioned anything about that, that means that he just wanted a laptop, and was going to possibly dabble in that stuff but not go full blown into it. Hence since he was not going full blown into it, what else would he use the Mac for? It would be a complete waste of money to get an expensive TOY that you will not use for the best things it is made for.

Hence, he got a pc.

totally agree

the new microsoft ads are annoying and seem to try and copy some of Apples techniques, just in a very bad way.

I just got a HDX16 fully

I just got a HDX16 fully speced for $3200, $2500 after 25% off coupon. I can afford any computer I want. But I still choose a PC. Apple OS is stupid and hard to use IMO. I mean theres no right click. How the *uck do you copy and paste??? Macs just look cool. Yes the one he got in the ad was a lower resolution but it can be custom ordered with a 1920x1080p screen. What that ad says is that macs are underpowered expensive pieces of crap, but its a cool liking crap. Here are my specs:

• Upgrade to Genuine Windows Vista Ultimate with Service Pack 1 (64-bit)
• Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo Processor T9800 (2.93GHz)
• 8GB DDR2 System Memory (2 Dimm)
• 320GB 7200RPM SATA Hard Drive with HP ProtectSmart Hard Drive Protection
• 1GB Nvidia GeForce GT 130M
• 16.0" diagonal High Definition HP Ultra BrightView Infinity Display (1920x1080p)
• Lightscribe Blu-Ray ROM with SuperMulti DVD+/-R/RW Double Layer
• Webcam + Fingerprint Reader with HP Imprint Finish (Fluid)
• Intel Next-Gen Wireless-N Mini-card with Bluetooth
• TV Tuner w/remote control
• Full Size Backlit Keyboard
• One 6 Cell and One 12 Cell Lithium Ion Batteries

What kind of mac can you get for this price? A pentium4, 512ram, 60GB HDD. But it will look cool...........LOL

No right click? All you have

No right click? All you have to do is click on the right button on the mouse Apple supplies you, troll.

mac all the way

What are you smoking? Macs hard to use have you ever touched one? Not to mention that your computer is probably about ten pounds. Macs aren't perfect (damn shiny mirror screen), but they look good, perform much more efficiently, and have a battery that lasts. Wait you couldn't figure out how to right click?- try ctl click or two finger tap/click... oh yeah multi touch.

Sony Vaio P (fanboy)

Sony fanboy here lol. Thanks for giving a shoutout about the vaio P haha.

Seth makes me laugh

Obviously the guy that wrote this article...Seth Weintrub or water his name is, is a typical computer illiterate Mac User who does not mind making a complete fool of himself.
I laughed out loud at each of the points he was making against the well chosen HP laptop (over the macGarbage)....

....What the heck is "blue ray resolution"????????? And what do you mean "the 1378x768 screen doesn't need the NVIDIA card?" Oh my god! hahahahahahahhahaha!

Now I will ditch my HP Windows Vista laptop, with 2 gig of ram, 100 gigabyte hard drive, BlueRay disk drive, and 2 GigHZ dual core processor which works flawlessly and cost under $1000, and run to the store and by an obsolete-out-of-the-box MacBook laptop for $3000!

Although, let me just say that crApple's ability to market garbage to all dumb people every born is quite ingenious!

Now comon i'Tards...hunt me down for insulting your little macs!

:o)

If so, maybe you should go to classes to improve your command of the language.
