Apple brick riddle resolved: laser beams?

In Monday's IT Blogwatch, Richi Jennings thinks we just might have solved the Apple "brick" riddle. Not to mention more Error'd...

Seth Weintraub finally reveals the secret:

The MacBook Brick is a block of high-quality, aircraft grade aluminum ... It is the beginning of the new Apple manufacturing process to make Apple logoMacBooks. It is totally revolutionary, a game changer ... [Apple] has spent the last few years building an entirely new manufacturing process that uses lasers and jets of water to carve the MacBooks out of a brick of aluminum.

In 1990, Fortune did a piece on Jobs' new production facilities in Fremont California for NeXT. It was, at the time, "The ultimate computer factory" ... But alas, the NeXT hardware didn't gain traction so the facility never really got to push out equipment as Jobs would have hoped.more


Jason Chen adds:

[Weintraub] has gone on record as saying that the rumored Apple Brick isn't a product, but a manufacturing process that can make high quality aluminum shells. The "brick" part comes in because the supposed technique carves these MacBook casings with lasers and high pressure water jets out of bricks of aluminum, making for a seamless and screwless design.

Whether or not it's true is still left to be seen, but one benefit would mean that there would be no need to bend metal (which creates weak spots).more


MG Siegler peers into the murk:

For weeks, rumors have been circulating that a new Apple product code-named “Brick” was nearing completion. Some said it was a redesigned Mac Mini, others thought it would be a sub-notebook, some thought an Apple TV. It appears now that it is a part of what will be a completely new way to manufacturing notebooks.

The report is pretty vague, but it sounds as if Apple is taking complete control over its MacBook production lines. Right now, the manufacturing is handled in China or Taiwan by companies like Foxconn. It’s not clear if Apple would open a plant here in the United States or simply be in charge of one overseas, but the new process is said to take a brick of aluminum ... and carve from it a MacBook using some sort of new revolutionary laser and jets-of-water system.

It may also be the answer to another mystery that has bedeviled Apple watchers — the innovation that Apple CFO Peter Oppenheimer, speaking at the last quarterly earnings conference call, warned analysts would cut deeply into Apple’s near term operating margins but result in something that “Apple’s competitors won’t be able to match” for years to come.more

I've been wondering whether the rise in shipping costs (fuel being the biggest part of that), along with worries over potential political upheavals, might cause a shift in thinking about where to locate plants. Sure, labor is cheaper elsewhere - but a plant located in North America could be heavily automated (keeping labor costs down), and close to shipping points (dropping those costs).

It's not quite that simple, of course - plenty of the products built in Asia are bound for Asia now (and more will be in the future) - but it looks like Apple may be thinking about this subject.more

Seriously though? Laser cutting from a brick of metal? I doubt that. The energy alone for this manufacturing process would push the prices of MBP's even higher than their already sky high rate. Add to that the source of the energy for laser cutting would surely come from a coal fired Chinese power plant, you can just be sure that this laptop really destroys the planet.more

CNC history

Apple's use of CNC turning is by far nothing new.

The history of CNC goes way back to 1775, when John Wilkinson invented a device to bore holes to Mfg. cannon barrels.

The Apple Brick is a Mac Mini with no moving parts.

The Apple Brick will be Apple's entry into the enterprise market. It will be the equivalent of a Mac Mini with a small integrated flash drive (instead of a hard drive) that holds the OS. It will not have a DVD/CD burner. It will set a low price point because there are no non-Apple moving parts, thereby cutting down on warranty service issues as well as up-front costs. Want a HD? Add your own laptop drive or SSD. Need to load or update software- use the LAN or WAN- the IT staff will have greater control over what can go on to (or come off) these boxes. You can buy a 3rd Party burner and connect through firewire or airport like the Air.

I predict that using this screwless MacBook will improve the quality of my life and computing experience. This is truly innovation at it's finest, worthy of news... all other competitors should fear this new innovative process. I'm going to toss away my old MacBook as it's clearly outdated now. What is that Apple you're whipsering in my ear? My year old iPhone is out of style.. need the new 3G one to be cool... Ok Ok, I'm sold, I'll get one of those too. Will it be "bricked" also? :P

The Apple brick is just

The Apple brick is just that, a brick. Apple will begin to market bricks in black or white so that people can build their very own iHome. Rumors has it that Apple will also create iLand developments to complete a person's iLife. Even though the land will sell for three times the normal market value, Apple will guarantee that your iLand will be 100% compatible with your iHome, iPod and iMac. iSewage, iWater, and iPower are other products in the works.

Why Milling?

Ummm ... wouldn't this cost a ton more to manufacture than say Plastic injection molding.

And even if they really want to go with aluminum why on earth would you carve (read mill) the case out of a solid block. Maybe they should take a look at the automotive industry and Aluminum extrusion, stamping, or hyrdoforming (not the same as hydrojet for milling). This would be far cheaper for a thin walled computer case.

Setting technology back 100 years...

So how is this a good thing for the environment? The plastic cases could be recycled cheaply. These aluminum cases and cockroaches will survive the the blast. Not very Green IMO.

The technology for cutting machine parts out of solid blocks of aluminum is not new.

I don't think it's any big technological leap for Apple to make the laptop casing out of a solid piece of aluminum. The question is doing it in a cost controlled way.

Great, now they will be made

Great, now they will be made with no visible screws, Thats (!) what I call a key selling point. Got to be worth hundreds to the asking price. As for manufacturing returning to the US, there is no possiblity of that ever happening. Though you could automate a plant in the US you can do it overseas far cheaper. Labor is cheaper, technology in Taiwan is superior to the US, the US lags in all automation techniques, all robotics come from Asia and are cheaper to ship, install, and service there...automate in the US, that is hilarious, I truly laughed loudly.
