Apple versus Google

Apple celebrates 1 Billion app downloads with a contest

Apple is nearing a very significant milestone in its App Store.  The little App Store that launched all of the other App Stores is about to giveaway/sell its one-billionth iPhone application.

Since the inception and immediate success of Apple's app store, Nokia, Microsoft, Blackberry, Android, and Palm have announced their own application storefronts.

It will be a long while before any of the other App stores come close to matching Apple's billion applications given away.

Gizmodo did a breakdown of the features of these stores below. Most are pretty much the same, give or take a few things.

It really appears that Apple has another groundbreaking hit on their hands.  To celebrate the milestone of crossing a Billion apps downloaded, Apple is offering up one prize at the time of the sale of the Billionth app.

Customers can enter up to 25 times per day, either by downloading an app or by visiting a separate page that negates the purchase requirement.

The prize is a new MacBook Pro, a new iPod Touch, a Time Capsule Base station/Hard drive, and $10,000 in iTunes gift card credit.

It appears that if things go as planned, Apple will hit that milestone on April 20, early in the morning.

I might have to wake up early and grab myself a few apps at that point, I sure could use a new MacBook Pro.
