Apple iPhone 2.2 update fixes some issues, causes others

Yesterday's iPhone update came as expected just after midnight with a slew of new features and bug fixes. Those are great, but the update also introduced some others. For the good news, head over to Apple's site and see what the update has to offer. Many people are saying it is also snappier and more reliable - especially Mobile Safari. And Google Maps continues to improve functionality with walking directions and Streetview.
Now for the bad news:
First and foremost, if you have a jailbroken iPhone don't update. If you did, you are no longer jailbroken. The 3G iPhone baseband was updated so it isn't as simple as just restoring the 2.1 version. On the EDGE iPhone, the baseband wasn't updated so you can safely downgrade to 2.1 and re-jailbreak. (Update: Jailbreak released)
Some third-party apps are becoming broken with 2.2. Core audio was updated significantly and not all of the audio apps are compatible. Other random things broke as well, but expect fixes from developers to roll out over the next few weeks. You can also try to do a fix by uninstalling and then reinstalling the broken apps.
I am not a fan of the Safari update. I can no longer see as much of the URL as I could before and I can't as easily navigate the URL with changes. There is no reason to put the search engine box to the right of the URL box; it worked fantastically before (the search box would appear below when you clicked on the URL box). A step back. Hopefully Apple has some plans to address this - maybe a preference to go back to the old layout.
Internet connectivity seems to be concern with a few people. The problems seem to be centered around 3G and can temporarily be resolved by switching to an EDGE network. Others are having issues with Wifi.
According to iPhone Atlas, there has been some SIM card errors:
“SIM card not inserted” or PIN lock Some users are receiving an error message indicating that the SIM card is not inserted, or that a PIN lock is in place when none should exist.
The SIM recognition issue can sometimes be resolved by removing the iPhone’s SIM card, then connecting it to your computer and restoring. iTunes may then reload the iPhone software successfully, after which you can re-insert the SIM card and attempt synchronization with iTunes.
If you get the PIN lock message, try the suggestions in this tech note.
Problems with email have been cropping up as well. Some are having issues deleting emails from their iPhones. Reseting the mail account's deleted items/trash folders seems to be a good temporary fix.
The App store is slow and still only lets you download one app update at a time. Apple took away the ability to update all of your apps at once with the initial release and still hasn't brought it back. A real pain if you have to update 10 apps. Still waiting to go back to original.
Last but not least, no push notifications. Promised for October, it was pulled from the 2.1 betas and has yet to see the light of day.
Hopefully 2.2.1 will fix some of these issues, until then - or more specifically when the 2.2 jailbreak comes out, I am sticking with 2.1 (updated: Jailbreak out).
