Apple versus Google

Apple iPhone 2.2 update fixes some issues, causes others

Yesterday's iPhone update came as expected just after midnight with a slew of new features and bug fixes. Those are great, but the update also introduced some others. For the good news, head over to Apple's site and see what the update has to offer. Many people are saying it is also snappier and more reliable - especially Mobile Safari. And Google Maps continues to improve functionality with walking directions and Streetview.

Now for the bad news:

First and foremost, if you have a jailbroken iPhone don't update. If you did, you are no longer jailbroken. The 3G iPhone baseband was updated so it isn't as simple as just restoring the 2.1 version. On the EDGE iPhone, the baseband wasn't updated so you can safely downgrade to 2.1 and re-jailbreak. (Update: Jailbreak released)

Some third-party apps are becoming broken with 2.2. Core audio was updated significantly and not all of the audio apps are compatible. Other random things broke as well, but expect fixes from developers to roll out over the next few weeks. You can also try to do a fix by uninstalling and then reinstalling the broken apps.

I am not a fan of the Safari update. I can no longer see as much of the URL as I could before and I can't as easily navigate the URL with changes. There is no reason to put the search engine box to the right of the URL box; it worked fantastically before (the search box would appear below when you clicked on the URL box). A step back. Hopefully Apple has some plans to address this - maybe a preference to go back to the old layout.

Internet connectivity seems to be concern with a few people. The problems seem to be centered around 3G and can temporarily be resolved by switching to an EDGE network. Others are having issues with Wifi.

According to iPhone Atlas, there has been some SIM card errors:

“SIM card not inserted” or PIN lock Some users are receiving an error message indicating that the SIM card is not inserted, or that a PIN lock is in place when none should exist.

The SIM recognition issue can sometimes be resolved by removing the iPhone’s SIM card, then connecting it to your computer and restoring. iTunes may then reload the iPhone software successfully, after which you can re-insert the SIM card and attempt synchronization with iTunes.

If you get the PIN lock message, try the suggestions in this tech note.

Problems with email have been cropping up as well. Some are having issues deleting emails from their iPhones. Reseting the mail account's deleted items/trash folders seems to be a good temporary fix.

The App store is slow and still only lets you download one app update at a time. Apple took away the ability to update all of your apps at once with the initial release and still hasn't brought it back. A real pain if you have to update 10 apps. Still waiting to go back to original.

No MMS...yet

Last but not least, no push notifications. Promised for October, it was pulled from the 2.1 betas and has yet to see the light of day.

Hopefully 2.2.1 will fix some of these issues, until then - or more specifically when the 2.2 jailbreak comes out, I am sticking with 2.1 (updated: Jailbreak out).

What People Are Saying

Multi media messaging is

Multi media messaging is crap and apple needs to do something about this half the time when i receive a picture message it doesn't work which pisses me off because these pictures are somewhat
sexual and i would like to get them.

I have had nothing but

I have had nothing but problems since updating to 2.2. I have had sooooooo many dropped calls, and in places where I had great 3g reception...now not even E, it just says at&t. This reminds me of when i first got my phone and I had to turn off 3g to complete a call, except that isn't even working now! c'mon 2.2.2

sir i have a iphone network

sir i have a iphone network is not coming on my phone & its become 2.2.1 version
plz help me out

no fix for what's really broken

GPS, bluetooth, maps, email, yada yada yada... let's complain about all sorts of new apps on the iphone instead of what the iphone broke in the first place. And that's text messaging. Not only is it close to impossible to type with any reasonable speed because god-forbid we allow the sideways keyboard on ALL iphone apps, but fwd of text messages, oh that's a real tough software fix, we can't possibly work on that now. We have many other priorities. And let's not get into how adding multiple recipients (I often send 100) takes about 25 minutes, and you have to use pen & paper because of a bug in the groups select page. What a joke. iPhone brings me so many new capabilities in a phone, yet takes away things that should be given. And it's very clear that the developers and most testers don't text message. I often wish I was back on the sidekick. What a joke!

emailing photos taken from I Phone Camera

There seems to be a problem when emailing pictures taken with the I Phone Camera and saving them in your photos folder

When you take a picture, it looks fine. Then Email the picture and it looks fine in the email box. However, when you save this picture in your "Photos" folder (default on the homepage) the picture is very fuzzy/blurred/out of focus/ or lower resolution. Not sure what it's doing but it's annoying. Try it and get back with me on this.

So..... Take a picture with the IPhone, then email the picture to yourself or anyone who has an iphone. Once you get the email, save the picture in your pictures folder. When you view the pic in your folder it will be out of focus.

Please let me know if you are also experiencing the same problem!!!!

thanks
Drew

I am also having the same

I am also having the same problem . . . so annoying as successfully saving these photos is required for my job. I went to the apple store and they said the only option was to wait until the next update as it seems to be a bug caused by the 2.2 update.

Saving emailed iPhone photos

Both my boyfriend and I are having the same issue with photos taken and sent from an iPhone being blurry when saved to the iPhone. However, if you recieve a photo taken from any other camera through email it's fine. I was going to try and save the iphone picture from my email to my computer, open it up with adobe photoshop and expand the photo size and resolution, then email it again and save it to my iPhone to see if that would fix the blur. I shouldn't gave to go through all of that though! Haha, hopefully the next iPhone update will fix this issue...

emailed photos

the originals are 1600x1200 or about 450Kb.
The emailed ones are sent and saved as 800x600 or about 220 Kb

I as well am having the same

I as well am having the same problem.
photos get taken and are saved in my library with excellent quality, but when emailed and saved they look out of focus.

...annoying.
