Apple may have some surprises for iPod and iTunes event on September 9th

By now we've heard all about the new form factor iPod Nanos and the slightly redesigned iPod Touches expected next week. We have a pretty good idea that iTunes 8 is on the way. Those are the pretty mainstream predictions. But what about some more "off-the-wall" possibilities?

Changing case colors. Wouldn't it be cool if Apple exercised this patent for changing the skin color on devices? What if one minute your iPod was red and the next minute your iPod was blue. You'd have a whole rainbow of colors in your pocket ... and you wouldn't have to choose just one.

Excer-gaming. The merging of exercise and gaming. The Nike Plus challenge has been a big hit with runners and the iPod Touch platform (especially with an added GPS) would add another element to that environment. However, there have long been rumors that Apple is working with 24 Hour Fitness to include iPod functionality in their gyms. Perhaps you can now race friends, in real time, on the stationary bike or treadmill. Or against virtual competitors in a marathon or virtual Tour de France. A mobile platform like the iPod Touch allows for this. This would give Apple an opportunity to challenge the Wii Fit's market.

HD Tablet. Apple could choose this occasion to release a Tablet with 720x480 resolution screen and the ability to do everything the iPod Touch platform can do with more space - perhaps the size of a Nokia N810. With more room for higher definition movies and a bigger virtual keyboard, the new tablet would break into new grounds for Apple's iPod platform.

Apple's own turn by turn GPS application. What if Apple, perhaps in conjunction with Google, came out with their own turn by turn GPS navigation system. But in typical Apple fashion, they made it better by including points of interest, gas station prices, and even which of your friends were close? Apple would, with just a little bit of software, be a major player in the multi-billion dollar GPS industry. GPS maps could be purchased in the Apps store and be saved on the huge storage area.

New Wireless options for iPods. 3G would be an interesting play into iPod Touches. Perhaps based on a similar model as the Amazon Kindle for downloading paid content, the devices could borrow some of the radio equipment for the 3g iPhone. Also, WiMAX is hitting Baltimore and soon Boston and other cities around the US. It is along shot...

And finally...

Steve Jobs may make an announcement on his health. Anywhere from "I changed my diet and lost a few pounds I am fine, get over it" to "I am very sick and am stepping down from the leadership of Apple". Jobs looked a bit more frail than normal at the WWDC so all eyes will be on him this time around. But perhaps he won't present? If this happens, expect speculation to go through the roof and the stock to enter a free fall. Maybe, if he does decide to leave, he will name a successor. Scott Forstall is my dark horse pick if this is the case. Hopefully, though, it is business as usual.

Boom!

New Ipod going solar powered?

Thats what I think. What with the patent on solar technology combined with a screen and Apples purchase of that low powered chip semi conductor company. It has the skills and technology.

Imagine a solar powered Ipod, at least extending the battery life.

Hoping for a built in microphone in the ipod touch too.

Could this be 'Brett Favre Saga II'?

Would Steve retire and then in a few months get the "itch" again to be at the helm again? It's happened before! It could happen again!

For Apple Stockholders...

For Apple stockholders, isn't the most important part of the presentation whether Steve Jobs does/doesn't look healthy?

The most important thing in

The most important thing in the presentation is how good Steve Jobs looks on stage. He must not appear unsteady, sit too much, drink too much water or make a mistake about a product. Any of those gaffs and the media and WS will have him in a casket within a week.

The rest is just icing on the cake. By that I mean no matter what new products Apple introduces, it won't matter unless it sells in the tens of millions. WS is already jaded to Apple's product introductions. Look for Mossberg to declare "Is this the best Apple can do for an iPod encore?" Many pundits have already said iPod sales have bottomed out and everyone in the world who wants one already has one.

if you build it,.....

Apple should take a look at the Timberland store which allows you to customize a boot in the store and have it delivered almost bugerkinglike. Then I could have my red touch with a 500 GB capacity for all my music. Not likely? I'll settle for doubling the capacity of my classic to 320

biggest 1.8 is 160GB

currently the technological limit of a 1.8 inch drive is 160GB... 320GB will happen, but it could be several more years.

Speaker / Microphone / 64GB

I'd like to see the iPod Touch gain stereo speakers, a microphone that would allow for a free WiFi phone, and 64GB or even 128GB of storage ツ

So the ipod touch have 3G as

So the ipod touch have 3G as iphone 2, and can convert dvd with http://www.dvd-ripper-copy.com/dvd-to-iPod.html as ipod touch?

"3G would be an interesting

"3G would be an interesting play into iPod Touches"

Doesn't that seem like a little much? The iPod Touch is already just an iPhone without the phone, so if you added the "phone" network, why not just get an iPhone? I guess I could see the kindle-like abilities, but I don't think AT&T would accept a device using the network without paying full service fees...

3G on iPod

The point of this is another device (iPod Touch) without a contract. This would pave the way for Voip calling applications and allow customers to get a contract with any carrier that provides service for the signal (probably still HSPDA). While it sounds cool it won't happen because Apple makes A LOT of money and has time and relationships with carriers for the iPhone. There just isn't any incentive for them to do this. They are making money on the iPhone and it is only the beginning. Maybe in a couple year will we see something like this but for now you can count on getting an iPhone for making cell phone calls on OS X Touch platform.
