Apple versus Google

Apple Netbook, where to start? ASUS Eee PC 1000HE

I just fell in love with a laptop, and for the first time since the IBM Thinkpad T40, it isn't a Mac.

The ASUS Eee PC 1000HE 10-Inch Netbook is exactly what I want in a Netbook and here's why... and what Apple could do with this hardware.

ASUS Eee PC 1000HE 10-Inch NetbookToday's NetBooks are a bit too slow.  The 1.6GHz Intel Atom N270, which is in just about every NetBook out there, can't do video very well and lags often enough when typing or opening programs to get annoying.  The update in the Intel Atom N280 is just enough (especially with the faster 667MHz front side bus. memory and GN40 chipset) to get the job done.  Coupled with the new processor, the 1000HE also has a much denser battery pack which ASUS says can ride 9.5 hours (real world is closer to 8 hours).  Wow, perfect.

While I would happily shell out a few extra bucks for two or more GB of RAM, the Hard Drive really hits the sweet spot.  My $1500 Unibody MacBook has the same 160GB that this $370 Netbook has.  Hrmph.

The comparisons to the MacBook don't stop there.  This thing has 3 USB ports compared to my MacBook's 2 (and the Air's 1).  It also has Bluetooth and 802.11N networking.  The screen, at 10 inches and 1024x600 pixels compares pretty well to my MacBook's 13 inch 1280x800 pixels.  The Eee only has a 92% sized keyboard as well.  These are the sacrifices you make when getting a laptop that can fit into a purse.

The Eee also has an SD Card slot which Apple doesn't think I want. If wanting an SD card slot is wrong, I don't want to be right. It makes uploading photos and videos a snap.

Of course the Eee PCs aren't made to the exacting standards with which Apple's new unibody MacBooks are.  They aren't going to bounce off the floor when you drop them and they are much more likely to break during normal usage.  Aesthetics are important, too: they aren't nearly as sleek.

But Apple – if they chose to start with this computer as a foundation – could turn out quite a cool little product that would keep us Mac users from defecting to ASUS.  They could even charge their 30% margins for the polish.

Here's what I see:

  • 2GB of RAM with an option to 4GB.  DDR3?  Sure!
  • Put a nice little aluminum enclosure on there that makes it stronger and lighter - and Mac-ier
  • Put some NVIDIA ION kit in there to blow the doors off the rest of the pack
  • MacOSX, obviously, with optimized drivers

That's it really.  30% margins make this a $500 machine.  I'd buy it in a heartbeat.  Alas, I don't think it will ever exist, Apple is probably going ARM with its Netbooks.

What People Are Saying

Unable to connect to Printer

I have ASUS Eee PC 1000H/XP. I love this computer but I am unable to hook this to a wireless printer (HP psc 2510 Photosmart). The light on the printer is lit showing it is hooked up to the router (my husband got an ASER last night and it hooked up to printer in 45 seconds), but every time I try to get my notebook to hook up, the radio signal is lost. I've called ASUS 3 times and no one can figure this out. It does find the printer but during the installation process the wireless connection to the printer gets lost every time. Does anyone have any solutions?

Just bought this little guy...

...and I love him. One thing, though, have you had any problems getting a wireless hookup? My neighbor tried to put me on his system and couldn't do it. I'm off to the library today to see if I can establish a connection there. Don't have a router yer. Any suggestions for the best router? Thanks. Great article, BTW.

The only maddening issue is the fingerprints. Looks terrible! But that's a small thing compared to the neatness of this little machine. It's better than my desktop.

Purposes for which you buy it

The computer must choose, depending on the purposes for which you buy it.
I need a very very powerful computer! ))

Reply Written on an 1000HE

I have no idea what any of you are saying when it comes to how fast this system is. I have absolutely no problems watching videos (no HD mind you) or anything else under XP and Arch Linux. I'm even thinking about installing Windows 7 on this little guy.

There is an error in the article. The 1000HE does not sport the new GN40 chipset (Intel doesn't plan to implement netbooks with it until Q2 or Q3). It still has the 945GMA.

Oh and if you're thinking about getting one I would highly recommend it. I'm actually using it as my main laptop now that my old one died. I love the size and the speed. I don't even have anything bad to say about it.

You make an interesting

You make an interesting point, but I think you're also missing out on some key points. I wrote a response to your article on my site here.

Oh, you said

Oh, you said defecting.

Never mind.

Cool

You forgot to mention with the small form, the Asus Eee is just plain cool. The Intel Atom is powerfully impressive.(look at the power consumption per MIPS!) I just wish Intel would make a cheap development board for us geeks.

As I have little better to do these days(unemployed) I have been messing around with the ARV 32bit family processor and embedded linux. The Nvidia Ion chipset might be just the thing for my latest goof-ball project.

As it is I'm unemployed and think twice before ordering an $6.00 AVR. the Eee is a toy that will just have to wait.

As for buying a MAC? Even when I was working 80 hour weeks I couldn't justify the cost.

eee vs macbook

where the comparisons do stop is speed and overall usability. I have a 1000H (school) and 2.0 Macbook, 320gb, 4gb ram.

There is no contest in speed. None.

iBook G4 vs EEE might be a race, though.

Looking forward to the new chip. Can't wait to stream video on my EEE without the hiccups.

Netbook

Seth, you carry a purse???

"It's not a purse. It's

"It's not a purse. It's European!"
j/k..I don't know how else to easy describe the Netbook size compared to 13 inch notebook size.
