As Apple's iPod line matures, a new device becomes likely for September 9th event

"..several more wonderful new products to launch in the coming months.."

That's what Apple's COO Tim Cook repeated early and often in the July earnings call two months ago. Apple isn't usually one to drop hints so this was news.

As most in the Apple community know, there is a music-related event on Tuesday. The consensus in said community is that there will be new iPod Nanos with a new form factor. The iPod Touch will likely also see some slight improvements and iTunes 8 will be released with more features. However, industry analysts think that is about it and are preparing their clients to be underwhelmed. These analysts aren't always right, however.

Apple has been uncharacteristically lackadaisical about its iPod secrecy. Just about every case maker has received designs for the new devices and has produced products ahead of the launch. It almost seems like Apple doesn't care about these things anymore. 4G Nanos are even showing up all over the Internet. Perhaps Apple is trying to divert attention away from the real story?

While I think that Apple will release some new MacBooks in about a month, I think this particular occasion might be a cause for some new type of non-Mac hardware. Apple's September events are traditionally an entertainment-only occasion.

So what is smaller than a computer and larger than life?

Yeah, I am going to say it...Will it be the tablet? The itablet, the iPad, the iPod Tablet?

The next iPod Touch?

I would not at all be surprised if Apple does spring a new device at the upcoming event and I think it is going to involve the iPod Touch. Everybody knows that the lower iPhone price has left the current Touch superfluous to the product line. Apple can do one of three things: drop it completely, drastically lower the price with minor upgrades, or make it a lot more than it is now. I vote for the last choice.

Back at MacWorld Expo last January I remember Andy Inhatko wrote about Apple making a slightly bigger Touch with more capabilities. I forgot where I saw the article but I remember that it impressed me as a solid idea, especially as a handheld internet device. But, as I remember, he left out two things that I think could find their way back into a platform like the Touch--an ebook reader and handwriting recognition.

I know this harkens back to the old Newton handheld but I don't mean resurrecting the old technology. The Newton was killed off, in part, because it had it's own unique operating system, the technology wasn't yet strong enough, and it was too big. This is no longer the case as Apple now has a unified and capable OSX platform; the chip technology is now more mature and powerful; and the touch screen would allow for a larger device that still fits in your pocket. Apple also has the much overlooked Ink handwriting recognition software. These two features would bring significant new functionality to the Touch.

An iPod Touch with these features could also serve as a testbed for a similarly equipped future iPhone with both lines eventually converging.

iPod Newton anyone?

Time for Change!

I hope you are dead on! I've also been thinking this nano revelation was all too easy. There will be something bigger that we haven't seen yet. Personally, I thought the nano would go touch, but without wifi (just a fat-nano with a full screen and no wheel that would bring improved video). Nevertheless, I am extremely hopeful for a megatouch (preferably with a 9.2" 16x9 screen and n wifi).
