The software running this dental clinic has been working fine for four-plus years, but one day it starts acting up, reports a pilot fish on the scene.
"One button on the menu bar hangs when pushed," says fish. "Vendor support is contacted, and the inevitable run through the checklist commences: power options, video options, directory permissions, anti-virus -- everything but the software.
"Then it gets to the processor, and the vendor support rep told me the following: 'Your RAM is fine, but your processor speed doesn't meet the minimum. It's 1.8 GHz, the minimum is 2.0 GHz. Let me give you the URL of our hardware requirements page.'
"The 2.0 GHz minimum processor is an Intel Pentium IV. Our 1.8 GHz processor is a dual-core AMD Opteron.
"I sighed and said, 'Can I speak to someone in Tier II support?'"
