AT&T does Turn-by-Turn GPS on iPhone, bills you later

AT&T Navigator, a rebrand of Telenav's turn-by-turn GPS navigation software, hit the iPhone app store this morning.  Watch out.  It is a Trojan horse into your wallet.

The initial cost is, of course, free.  However, AT&T adds $10 to your monthly phone bill until you somehow get them to stop billing you.

That means this "free" app will likely cost you $120/year unless you are somehow able to wade through AT&T's customer service system to disable the product. This is the same system that took two weeks to activate my iPhone (I had a credit card billing address in a different region as the area code I needed - ugh!).

The GPS navigation system is a monthly charge so it should only apply if you are using it, right?  What if you don't need it for a month?

You still get charged.

Can't you just delete the app?

Deleting the app is not enough(!!) and there is no clear way to stop the billing online.  Until you can get their customer support to stop charging you, every month, you'll be paying $10 in additional fees.  Even if you don't use the service.

To get this off of your bill you are looking at spending a lot of your time on the phone with AT&T's "knowledgeable" reps.  Oh, and this is a new system...surely there won't be any glitches in your cancellation </sarcasm>.

This is a disturbing new trend of use now, pay later applications that target the same "credit card mindset" that has put many consumers in debt. Hopefully they won't be successful...but unfortunately, I think AT&T might have a hit on its hands.

I'm personally waiting for TomTom's system to come out which should be a one time charge and a better service.

What People Are Saying

missing town

It's funny that it costs so much when I can't seem to find any businesses in my parent's town. There are simply no tax collectors, ACE hardwares or grocery stores. Funny that I drive past like 10. Garmin, tom tom and google can find them just fine, but at&t's navigator seems to have a blind spot. It's incredibly annoying. I don't need the navigator in my town, so why have it at all?

Well, I'm off to find the remove button in my online account.

Come guys it's not that

Come guys it's not that hard. Your telling me that you can work your IPhone but you don't know how to add/remove the service through your online account? Really?!? It takes less then 1 mintue. The Telenav service has always been a subscrption based service, and the fee has always been $9.99. Learn how to read guys, it's the 1st thing, on teh 1st line of the description. You either buy it or your don't and wait for Apple to release a GPS that fits "just your needs". And for god sakes stop the crying, the violin is getting played out. Sheeesh

I didn't have an option

On my delightful and fun new phone they didn't give me an option. I got a week free and then automatically charged $9.99 per month unless I cancel. FYI

Irony?

LOL. You tell them they should learn to read, yet you can't spell.

Irony?

This is nothing new. I used

This is nothing new. I used telenav's product when I had a BB. Now I have an iPhone. It was a pain to cancel when I had on my BB because then the only way to cancel was to call TeleNav and wait on hold for an hour or so, then be transfered 6 or so times.

At least now, I only have to talk to one person ATT.

AT&T's Navigation Pricing

Yea, Hi. I'd just like to say to all the people defending AT&T or Verizon for that matter that sometimes their ideas to squeeze people financially (Nickel & Diming) can backfire in their faces. I own an iphone 3G, and have been waiting like crazy for a turn by turn navigation app. WHY in the world would I pay $10 per month for something I might only use every so often. I mean, I know my way to work, to my friends and families houses, the food store etc. Think I'll forego the whole Nav on the phone thing, buy myself a Garmin (best in the game) 255T for $150 and be done. Hmmm...$10 per month, $120 per year, 2 year iphone contract $240. Nahhhh, but thanks so much anyway. Hopefully Tom Tom has the smarts to be a significant player.

I fail to see your point

I fail to see your point Seth. AT&T offers this subscription based service they do not require you to pay for it. Or are you just b*tching because you had a beef with them that sounds to be your fault.

As always what makes America so great if you don't like AT&T go some where else. By the way it took Verizon 14 months to fix my FIOS bill that was their fault.

Talk about misinformation...

It is really a shame that a piece like this is really written in the first place. Dale actually said it best. It doesn't matter what carrier you are on or what phone you use, Telenav is available on all of them and its a subscription based service, always has been. How somebody can ignore 'Subscription based service' and acknowledge its ok to bill and then turn around and bash the carrier for being sneaky is beyond me. Regardless of your opinion of AT&T or any carrier, if you are going to complain about something, at least make it factual and not base it on your own mistake. Sounds like the writer just has a beef with AT&T and wrote this as an attack and showed a poor lack of judgement and ahem, intelligence. This is how misinformation can hurt. And it applies to any carrier or any other business for that matter. Shame on you Seth.

It's free on Sprint.

It's free on Sprint.

Free??? Free my a**. When

Free??? Free my a**. When I had sprints (just switched to ATT) I had to pay 5.99 per month, which is less than AT&T's, but far from free.
