The World Is My Office

AT&T's GPS goes global for all but iPhone

SANTA BARBARA, CALIF. -- I've got good news and bad news for AT&T customers who travel internationally. The good news is that the company's Navigator GPS offering is now available in 20 countries! The bad news is that it's not available on iPhone.

AT&T today announced a AT&T Navigator Global Edition. That means people who own AT&T Tilt, BlackBerry, BlackBerry 8820, BlackBerry Curve 8310, BlackBerry Pearl 8110, BlackJack II and MOTO Q 9h phones can now get addresses, maps, turn-by-turn directions and more on their phones in Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean and most of Western Europe. Just in time for the Olympics, AT&T's service covers six cities where Olympic events will take place in China.

Weirdly, the iPhone 3G, which is new and supports GPS, isn't mentioned.

AT&T Navigator Global Edition also supports a few more languages, including German, Italian and Spanish.

This is good news -- no, great news -- for people like me (I use a BlackBerry Pearl on AT&T and already subscribe to the GPS service) who travel internationally.

But it's weird and bad news for iPhone users. Why no iPhone support? It doesn't make sense. I've got that question in to AT&T, and will report back what they answer.

iPhone GPS

The GPS in Blackberry applications is turned off by default (at least it is with Verizon, my service) even though the hardware supports it... you're not paying for GPS support, you're paying them to let you use the GPS that comes with the phone.

GPS in the iPhone is enabled by default and you can use it with Google Maps, which comes built into the phone, so you don't need to pay anything to use it and you don't need to subscribe to ATTs maps and navigation 'service'.
