Australia mandates clean ISP feeds to certain recipients

I can see where worries could arise over potential loss of some freedoms, but any such concerns should be set aside when it comes to protecting children when possible. This article reports that the Australian Telecommunications Minister, Stephen Conroy has announcement that it will be mandatory for Internet service providers to send "clean," filtered feeds to schools and homes. "Clean" here means free of inappropriate material and pornography. I'm not sure exactly who decides what is and isn't appropriate, for instance violence is also mentioned, but as we all know there's a wide spectrum of what people consider acceptable. Just look at what children already are exposed to on regular broadcast television channels and even in animated materials. To some, if it's drawn in cartoon format, it is not real and therefore, more acceptable than say, if it is performed by filmed/taped actors. Drawing that line will be difficult, although Conroy does state that "anyone wanting uncensored access to the internet will have to opt out of the service." I'm not sure how that'll work, but I do think he'll meet with less resistance if users are given options.
