The World Is My Office

Black Friday? Cyber Monday? Here comes 'Mobile Tuesday'

SANTA BARBARA, CALIF. -- Step aside, Black Friday and Cyber Monday -- there's a new discount day in town. A cell phone marketing company called Mobigosee is trying to launch a third shopping day called "Mobile Tuesday," where the discounts come to you in the form of cell phone coupons and advertisements.

The first of these "Mobile Tuesday" events is tomorrow, December 2. Mobigosee is launching the event with just three companies advertising deals: McDonald's, Finish Line and RedTag, according to an article in AdvertisingAge. The promotions will target stores in 10 cities, and will include radio, "outdoor media" and online ads to promote the program.

Some 18,000 people have signed up to receive Mobile Tuesday notices, and most of those have reportedly come through "Black Friday" leak sites.

What do you think? Will Mobile Tuesday catch on? Are you willing to hand over your cell phone number to a marketing company in exchange for deals?

What People Are Saying

I like it, I signed up at

I like it, I signed up at http://www.aboutmobiletuesday.com and set my preferences. I told them what i wanted to receive and they made me double opt in. I like that cant wait to get my first offer.

PS send me them while I am in meetings who cares that is what vibrate is for.

Mobile Tuesday?

No thank you.
And here is why: Cyber Monday, I am right there with everyone, making sure I got the best deals in the last few days and making sure I don't miss sales on the last few items on the list. But, how many websites went down, didn't work, slowed to a snail's pace, or made shoppers type in information multiple times because of the inability to host the number of shoppers. Ahhh! How frustrating. Especially if you are not just browsing for xmas. Maybe you need something bought and sent ASAP for a birthday, dinner party etc...
Now imagine this with your cell. Your lifeline, and many times your business. How dare they even consider this option unless they can guarantee that my normal business and personal usage will not be slowed, interrupted or different in the least. If I have a cell issue that day, am I going to have to wait, on hold, for an hour to talk to a service rep? After 4 days of not being at work, playing catchup, will my phone vibrate every thirty seconds in an impromptu meeting? Or will it just be that I have to spend half the day deleting junk from my inbox so that my phone isn't near capacity and actually functions like it should?
Until technology in the wireless community is much improved, don't you dare play around with my main connection to the world just to see if you can break the record for most Tickle-Me-Elmos sold in the 4th quarter.

Although I think the timing

Although I think the timing is a bit off, and maybe the fact that they are trying to make a new day out of it or whatever, is kinda stupid, I do think that this is an awesome idea, after all, it is opt-in, and unlike what was suggested in another comment I read, people usually have self control and can decide for themselves if they want to buy something or not, it's not *useless* if you want it... No one's forcing your hand and making you buy stuff, if you like it or want it, and you have the means to do so, then by all means get it, and get it for as cheap as possible, and this service is providing the means to help you do just that... After all, you can't take all that money with you when you go, so you might as well enjoy it while you're still here! =)

This is absurd. I think

This is absurd. I think these marketing vultures need to stop invading every type of media in existence in an attempt to get us to buy more crap than we need. Enough already! What's next, Pager Wednesday?

I have my druthers with

I have my druthers with advertising and marketers, but you know what, the labor that goes into posting content should be valued. Here's to someone trying to make the best of it all.

Love it!

I can see huge opportunity for independently owned small businesses to take advantage of an opportunity to market during Mobile Tuesday! Love this idea...

Mobile Tuesday

Outstanding, I just love Mobile Tuesday. Sounds like my kind of day!
