The World Is My Office

Bring your own WiFi hotspot

SANTA BARBARA, CALIF. -- A new product from iBox2Go gives you mobile broadband connectivity to the Internet, plus a WiFi router that enables up to 10 users to share the connection -- all in a secret-agent mini-briefcase.

iBox2Go's "Internet in the box" line of products, launched today, uses a Sprint Mobile Broadband USB card for connection speeds that might reach as high as 3.1Mbps (similar to DSL or Cable).

The card can be removed from the iBox2Go unit, and used directly in your laptop if there's only one user.

The iBox2Go comes in three flavors. The cheapest one, called the iB300, is $200 (plus the monthly Sprint bill), offers a 40-foot range. The iB100 costs $250 and gives you a 50-foot range. And the iB500 costs $350 and gives you 200-foot range.

You can also rent one.

An iBox2Go is ideal for "bedouins" -- people who work at companies without offices -- or anyone who travels on business in groups of more than one. When you compare even the most expensive iBox2Go unit with the cost of an additional mobile broadband account, it pays for itself in just a few months.

i use the most recent cradlepoint mobile broadband router which you can get for under $200. its very small and it can be powered by battery or ac power, so you can use it in virtually any environment.

the two primary benefits of these routers: 1) you dont have to have an extra usb device sticking out of your ultraportable laptop since most have built-in wifi (this is helpful when you are constantly moving around the office or hotel room), 2) being able to connect multiple devices at the same time (its nice to have a ipod touch connected by wifi at the same time as your laptop, without having to swap the card.)

Apple has had this for years. Its called an Airport Express.

Um, dude... Although the Airport Express is a really cool product, and is quite handy for travelers, it is a completely different product. The airport express is a basic Wireless Router, which turns a wired Ethernet connection into a wireless one, while a the products described above convert a Mobile Broadband signal (for example, an wireless EVDO connection to the internet, such as the services provided by all major mobile phone carriers)
