Stirring IT Up

Video: The burning itSMF question

I was at the IT Service Management Forum USA's Fusion '08 conference in San Francisco earlier this week to moderate a couple of riveting panel discussions. I tried to keep my mind on the important business of service management, but I couldn't seem to let go of a nagging question: Why does the IT Service Management Forum render its acronym as "itSMF," with the "it" in lower-case italics?

To find out, I walked up to random attendees at the conference to get their thoughts on the matter. A couple of them looked like they were ready to reach for the pepper spray, but most of them were good sports. Take a look.

VP of CW at itSMF?

This video was a spot-on treatment of the conference. I saw Don's name on the preregistered press list for itSMF and was immediately curious what the the editorial director and VP of ComputerWorld and InfoWorld would be doing at this show. Now it looks like moderating a couple of panel discussions was an ingenious front for a subtle roast of an otherwise stodgy conference.

Here's my answer to Don's question: The IT in itSMF is lower case because the old-guard technology vendors in this market have been pushing the same legacy code for decades. The IT in itSM is currently an embarrassment. It is going to take the efforts of a new breed of SaaS and Web 2.0 vendors like Service-now.com to justify the capitalization of IT.

Lower Case? Nut-Case more like!

Don

Nice video and I think thought provoking - very funny though - keep it up!

Most of your respondents, it could be said are probably correct. It could be seen to separate out the "IT" from "Service Management" or to give emphasis on the "IT" element or on "Service Management" or a myriad of other different reasons some of which are given but in reality, we are not that sophisticated nor deep enough in our thinking. I was at the conference and you should have asked me :-)!! LOL

I would have told you that it's simply there in italics for branding purposes and when we designed the logo back in 1991, that was the prevailing thing - "look and Feel" and getting something different and snazzy and talked about! No harm done and it really is kinda eye catching too!

By the way, when you write itSMF you should write "The itSMF" - problem solved! We are an organisation, not a thing. It's simple English really! LOL

There are more important and exciting things to explore about best practice in Service Management though, but I enjoyed the video all the same,

Cheers!
