Burying the truth? Boycott Novell hit by Denial of Service attack

Boycott Novell is one opinionated site. If you think I'm pro-Linux and hard on Microsoft, you haven't been reading Roy Schestowitz, who makes me look as mild as a May day. Boycott Novell, which was founded in 2006 in reaction to Novell's partnership with Microsoft, is very popular with about a million hits per month, but it's also made enemies. Enemies who seem to have had enough of Boycott Novell recently launched a DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service) attack, which has almost knocked the site out.

In an e-mail interview with Schestowitz, he wrote that he's trying to make the best of a bad situation, "I guess the most reassuring way to look at it is as a sign of success. If they try to shut us up so miserably by resorting to crime, then it means our writings have great impact."

As for the DDoS attack, Schestowitz wrote, the site "has been under DDoS attack for 3 days now. We're still struggling to just stay online while hosts investigate where the attacks come from." In the meantime, he has spoken to the British police about the matter.

I've looked a bit at what's happening to Boycott Novell, and it sure looks like a DDoS attack to me. The attacks are coming from many addresses, and are using both sheer volume and easy Web server attack methods such as sending HEAD requests. A HEAD HTTP request simply requires that a site replies with a Web page's meta-information, e.g. page title, server version, etc. If you flood a site with multiple HEAD requests, you'll soon put it out of action.

The sad truth is that these days, if you want to blow up someone's Web site, it's really not that hard. There are DDoS kits such as Machbot, Barracuda, and BlackEnergy, which can be used by anyone with access. These enable users to easily select the site to be blasted, and then the programs reach out to their bot-network of compromised Windows PCs to launch their attacks.

These DDoS programs are best known for their assaults against countries' Internet infrastructure such as 2008's DDoS wars on Estonia and Georgia. But, if you know the right people and you're willing to pay, anyone can effectively shut down most Web sites.

In Boycott Novell's case, I strongly suspect that that someone iis a person with a screw loose and a grudge against Schestowitz's strong anti-Microsoft and proprietary software views. If that seems a little bit over-the-top, well, as I just pointed out, it doesn't really require any technical expertise to knock out a Web site. All you need is a grudge and the right contacts.

Welcome to 2009, when anyone can say whatever they want on the Web, and where others can do their best to make sure that their voices are never heard.

What People Are Saying

The truth is out there

Although Roy doesn't do him self any favors in the way he reports the news at Novell there are many truths in what he says.

There are big job cuts coming and for those of you that didn't notice the job cuts at Novell have been happening for months but are being executed in such a way that reporting them publicly is not required.

I don't think they are "cooking the books" as they have always been above board financially.

Two things that Roy has missed though, is that this year Novell's earning will most likely drop below the $900 million level for the first time in a long time and they are selling of pieces of the business behind the scenes like the news that the New Zealand arm of the business will soon be sold to internal staff.

Stay posted, Roy may not be totally right, but where there is smoke there is fire.

Roy's an idiot.

Roy Schestowitz is a complete idiot.
Why doesn't he talk of IBM laying off thousands of workers despite RECORD PROFITS?
Why?
Because IBM is a Linux backer, that's why.
Why doesn't Roy talk of Asus dumping Linux on it's netbooks because Linux doesn't sell.
Why, why why...

Schestowitz is a self centered, ego maniac who has one goal in site and that is to splatter his name into every corner of the earth.
Well now he has met his match.
IOW the other side is fighting back.
I sure as hell do not agree with their methods however I do agree with their reasoning.
Schestowitz seems to think that he can stand in a public place ad yell fire and that nobody is going to call him on it.
That isn't the way real life works.
Of course if Schestowitz actually left his dorm room and experienced real life he would know that.
But he won't and he doesn't.
He is a recluse, failure of a student who has been sponging off people his entire life.
Now he is learning a valuable lesson.
Hopefully he remembers it.

Complete idiots

You know there's no point reading any further when a poster opens their comment with a remark like this one, "Fred Somebody is a complete idiot..."

It will be apparent then that reason has fled their brain for pastures new and reading more will be wasted effort.

Why is this even news

Why is this even news to write a column about? Who cares.. All Roy writes about is how bad the world is because of Microsoft. He's been touting huge layoffs at Novell for months. Any time he's challenged on it the answer is my source tells me it's coming. Novell is just cooking their books right now. Blah, blah, blah. Every problem in the world is due to Microsoft and the dreaded partnership with Novell. He makes stuff up.

There is no reason why SJVN should even write a column up on this. Find other things to write about.

"The truth" -LOL!

The only "truth" revealed by that site is that some Linux Fanboys are ranting loonies.

In that regard, he is doing Microsoft a favor.

Some are crazy. Most are not.

Some Linux users are fanboys as you call them, but most are not and just like using Linux for whatever reasons they deem important. The problem is that the quiet user rarely gets noticed but the screaming radical activist does and unfortunately it is that type which gets the attention which tends to be mostly negative. Roy is entitled to his opinion and I don't agree with people trying to shut him down however at the same time I don't condone his methods and I feel he could be far more effective if he toned down the sensationalistic headlines vilification of people that don't agree with him. If he doesn't like Microsoft, fine but instead of gloating over their employees losing their jobs why not accurately discuss the reasons behind this rather than speculate and use anonymous emails as his sources.
There is still a part of me that suspects this is nothing more than a publicity stunt designed by Roy in order to gain support and sympathy. Nothing that guy does to promote himself would surprise me. Tell me, where does a person get the time to post thousands of messages to Usenet each month? Then he also has his BN site, his own site, various online blogs he posts to, articles he gets paid to write for other companies and so forth. And yet he claims this is a labor of love? Love is great but it doesn't pay the rent. It all does not add up and I am convinced that there is far more to the Schestowitz phenomena than meets the eye. Maybe that's why he is being attacked?
Some person or person's figured out what he is really up to and decided to slow him down. I don't know and I really don't care other than observing this as yet another sideshow curiosity much like the bearded lady at the local carnival.

Roy Schestowitz Harms OSS.

As an OSS user for many years, I just wish Roy Schestowitz would find a different hobby to keep himself occupied. Apparently he has far too much time on his hands. Maybe stamp collecting? The reason I wish he would disappear is because his crusade is doing more harm than good. He is a walking, talking, real live example of the stereotypical Linux user that gives Linux a bad rap. I have seen some of his material used by VARS selling Windows and Microsoft products, as an example of what type of people are behind the Linux movement and it is quite effective at scaring the clients into submission. How about coin collecting Roy?

Re: Roy Schestowitz Harms OSS.

You have a full right to disagree with anyone's ideas. But if it is comfortable for you, when anyone's (nonviolent, etc.) ideas are beeing shut down, then you deserve to lose your own freedom of speech. Which is nothing what I will ever wish to you.

One detail please !

Are you an OSS or an FOSS user ? For Linux cause it matters a lot.

I Am Both.

I am both a foss and Linux user and I support both as well. I am also a Windows and OSX user although I have been slowly moving off Windows XP and migrating toward OSX for my desktop systems and Linux for my home servers.
