The World Is My Office

Call it a 'sub-subnotebook.' New 'PC' is small as a cell phone!

SANTA BARBARA, CALIF. -- IMOVIO launched today a smaller alternative to a subnotebook -- much smaller. The new iKIT is about the size of a PDA from ten years ago, but has a QWERTY keyboard and connects to the Internet at 3G speeds via your cell phone or Wi-Fi.

The $175 Linux-based system has a Webcam built in, as well as a range of applications, including Web browsing, e-mail and IM.

It can connect to the Internet using a standard Wi-Fi connection, or it can use your cell phone's mobile broadband connection via Bluetooth.

The company is currently pitching it to mobile network operators and retail stores.

It's being compared to the ill-fated Palm Foleo. But the comparison doesn't work because the Foleo was Palm-phone only, didn't fit in a pocket and cost well over three times the price of the iKIT.

Would YOU carry a second device (in addition to your cell phone) like this?

What People Are Saying

obsolete in advance

This is just a smaller version of a palmtop from a decade and a half ago... these days, cellphones have slide out keyboards... I'd rather see my cellphone have a slightly larger screen, and use that instead of having one of these.

However, they should still sell because of the low price. A small toy you'll quickly tire of, and exchange it for either your next cellphone or a netbook with a larger screen.

interesting....

incredible... the tec becomes smaller

Uhm Zipit Z2 knock-off?

It loks like one to me. A Zipit Z2.
If it has a webcam and a browser it's perfect for teens and college students!
I think they should join with Zpitwireless.com and make this thing the new Z3 or atleast give Zipit some credit for making a device like it first.

Exactly what I need!

Keep the design, make the screen .5" bigger and put windows mobiile 6.1 on it.

You would sell a million.

I take a lot of notes in a lot of different places and this is exactly what I need.

My dream: a rim type of keyboard, the Imovio design with slightly bigger screen and Win - Mo; even Palm with docs to go on it would do.

Why can't I have this device!

prostat

The last one about prostat improving readership should be prostat something that the bloggers are reading because that is what they want, they want more people to be reading their blogs. prostat prostat, prostat ilacı, prostat hapı, prostat tedavisi, prostat bilgi, prostat kanseri, prostatit, prostat ameliyatı, ameliyatsız prostat, Prostat Nedir, Prostat Tedavisi, Prostatlı Hastalar, Prostatın Büyümesi

REDFLY is the solution people are looking for!

I would rather carry around my smartphone that fits in my pocket. It gives me the same features as this device without the bulkiness. However, when I need to get work done I pull out the REDFLY. It's the size of a book (1x6x9, 2lbs) and let's me have a bigger screen and keyboard. REDFLY's unique architecture has no OS or data stored on the device and acts solely as a terminal. This makes it nice for companies with security concerns. There is nothing on it if it ever gets stolen. So, I can stick to my phone and still access the company intranet, email, Citrix session, office docs, calendar, tasks, and internet. That's a beautiful thing!

If it has a touchscreen it

If it has a touchscreen it might replace my palm t/x. If not oh well. I still like a small phone that is easy to carry all the time, so I have two devices.

Thanks, but why would I want

Thanks, but why would I want this little hunk of junk when I have a T-Mobile G1 in my pocket?! It won't be long and the G1 will be a desktop replacement, though admit-tingly not a full time replacement. Android will evolve faster than Apples iPhone, and already is more powerful!

check out the Redfly instead

If you're going to carry a device to use with your phone, and have a Smartphone running Windows Mobile (like my Treo that gets my corporate email from an Exchange server capable of wiping out the Smartphone if it's lost or stolen) you should check out celiocorp's Redfly. It's a cool mini-laptop-like smartphone terminal with a decent-sized screen & keyboard that make it soooo much easier to use the web (your smartphone is its wireless connection, via usb cable or bluetooth), deal with email, and use Mobile Office apps. With no OS or cpu or storage (unless you attach a thumb drive), there's no security risk and you can even use the monitor connecton on the Redfly for PowerPoint presentations. 8 hrs battery life, promotional price under $200

Nice concept, but the device

Nice concept, but the device is miserably underpowered.
There is a similar device called the openpandora, with much better hardware. It´s Open source, so it remains to be seen if there is enough interest in it from software developers.

But if there is enough contribution it will easily blow this meager "subnotebook" away.
