The World Is My Office

Christmas shopping at 35,000 feet

SANTA BARBARA, CALIF. -- You know that SkyMall mega-catalog you see in the seat-back pouch on most airlines? Soon you'll be able to actually buy all that stuff during flights. I'm going to do all my birthday gift and holiday shopping aloft this year.

SkyMall announced today a new relationship with a Canadian company called GuestLogix Inc. that will enable the in-flight purchases. Here's how it will work, as far as I can tell: The flight attendants will be issued new handheld gadgets (or use the old ones already on board for processing food and drink orders), and will at some point during the flight roam the isles offering to take your order. You'll be able to use the SkyMall catalog as a menu, and just order whatever gadget or unnecessary home decorating object you desire. They'll ship it to your home.

The SkyMall catelog is really just a ginormous roll-up of 133 other catelogs, including (in alphabetical order) Belkin, Brookstone, Casio, Franklin Electronics, Gadget Universe, Hammacher Schlemmer, Magellan's, Mobile Edge, Panasonic, Sanyo, Smarthome, TeleNav, The Sharper Image and TigerDirect.

And that's why this is such good news. SkyMall is a great catalog, and flights provide us with enormous downtime -- especially those of us who are constantly traveling on business.

Now, instead of scheduling time to go gift shopping, I'll just check my schedule for the next cross country flight.
