Clip this
Well, this malware attack approach is a new one to me. If you're like a lot of people, copying and pasting while you're surfing are second nature. But beware; there's some rather clever malicious script out there that users are most likely picking up via Flash-based ads while visiting legitimate websites. According to Gregg Keizer's Computerworld article "Mac, Windows clipboards poisoned by URL attack", URLs are being pasted into the clipboards of unsuspecting Mac and Windows users.
It must be very annoying because your clipboard essentially gets taken over. If you try to copy something and then paste it, what you'll paste will be the malicious string. Even Chris Thornton (creator of the Windows clipboard add-on ClipMate) is familiar with this malicious tactic and said his clipboard was affected after visiting the MSNBC website. Keizer notes that Thornton said, "If someone replies to an e-mail, they paste from the clipboard, and get the URL. Maybe they catch it, maybe not. Likewise with blog posts, guestbooks, comments, Facebook, etc."
There is a way around this though; you can clean out your clipboard by shutting down your browser, or, Keizer adds, you may be able to just close the browser tab with the infected Flash ad. Whatever the solution, this is just another example of malicious script wheedling its way into unsuspecting users' computers - these malware writers never cease to amaze me.
