Computing From the Front Lines

Dell/AMD pause, but great deals available

Apparently, Dell have stopped selling AMD-powered machines online. It took some time for Dell to start selling AMD, but I know that for many only an AMD CPU would do - certainly if you wanted cheaper 64-bit computing the low-end Opteron machines were a good deal.

Dell abandoning AMD was later denied (see Reports of AMD's demise on dell.com prove premature.

I managed to pick up two Dell servers with a starting price of just 99GBP (Opteron, Dual Core, 512MB RAM, twin 80GB disks). Even when I added 3 year support contracts and 4GB RAM the machines came in at less than the cost of a new Quad-core server I bought in December. These are old tech (by today's standards), but a pair of genuine 64-bit servers at that price is difficult to ignore.
