Dell laptops to connect worldwide

SANTA BARBARA, CALIF. -- Dell plans to unveil "later this year" optional new hardware that will let you connected to 3G wireless broadband networks throughout the United States, Europe and elsewhere.
The laptops will come with Qualcomm’s Gobi technology, which is an embedded card that will be installed by Dell.
If you buy one and subscribe to the right
service, you'll be able to connect within the U.S. via EV-DO networks (like those maintained by Verizon Wireless, Sprint or T-Mobile) and in Europe via HSPA networks (like Vodafone).
T-Mobile International, Telefonica, Verizon Wireless and Vodafone "have either completed certification or are expected to do so this month," according to Qualcomm.
Rather than swapping cards to switch between carriers, the Gobi solution is software configurable with a five-second downloaded update.
The Gobi option will be offered during product ordering across Latitude, Dell Precision, and even consumer laptops.
Laptop rival HP announced Gobi support in February.
