SANTA BARBARA, CALIF. -- Denver International Airport -- one of the biggest in the world -- offers something every airport should offer: fast, free Wi-Fi.
The airport threw a switch about a month ago, and transformed its for-pay airport-wide Wi-Fi into a free, advertiser-supported service. Overnight, without promotion, usage increased tenfold (now 7,000 to 8,000 connections per day).
Best of all, the network may be the first in the U.S. with 802.11n Draft 2.0 capability.
But wait, it gets better. The airport uses Meru Networks' single-channel architecture. If one access point gets overwhelmed, some users are kicked over to another one. The access points overlap.
With airlines rolling out in-flight Wi-Fi, and major airports succeeding with free, airport-wide Wi-Fi, things are looking up for anywhere computing enthusiasts.
Now if only airports would add more electrical outlets.
