Docs go green

This week Xerox Corp. unveiled a new tool offered by its Office Services division called the Sustainability Calculator. According to Patty Calkins, vice president of environment, health and safety for the company, the calculator can determine the amount of energy your document-producing systems, such as printers, copiers and multifunction device, are consuming as well as how much carbon they are contributing to the planet's production of greenhouse gasses.

Needless to say, Xerox staff will be happy to let you know how newer, more energy-efficient products can reduce your "carbon footprint." Calkins points out that the tool includes the energy required to build and deploy the new devices into the energy payback calculation. She also observes that today most printing devices are rarely used, citing internal studies showing only 1-2% utilization rates for them. However, these devices are almost always turned on and sucking up electricity. Deploying more energy-efficient systems more thoughtfully will go a long way to cutting your energy costs while doing something good for the planet, Calkins says. Xerox has made a less comprehensive version of the Sustainability Calculator available here.
