Culture Crash

Was "Karl Rove's IT guru" murdered?

It sounds like the plot of the next Oliver Stone film.

A Republican IT consultant is killed in a mysterious plane crash, just days before he is scheduled to testify about conservative political operatives hacking the 2004 presidential election.

And yet the story is real, or at least parts of it are.

Technology consultant Mike Connell, whose GovTech Solutions firm created Web sites for George W. Bush and John McCain among other leading Republicans, died on December 19 when a Piper Supercub he was flying crashed three miles short of the runway at Ohio's Akron-Canton Airport.

GovTech is one of three firms involved in "mirroring" votes for the 2004 presidential election in Ohio. Connell was set to testify in a lawsuit alleging computer fraud bought against Ohio Secretary of State Ken Blackwell by voters' rights groups.

The man who will now forever be known as "Karl Rove's IT guru" was an experienced pilot who allegedly had been warned not to fly the plane because it might be sabotaged.

(I see Nick Cage in the title role, with Jennifer Connelly as a scrappy yet sexy reporter relentlessly pursuing the truth and Philip Seymour Hoffman as the inscrutable Rove.)

The problem with this Oscar-worthy blockbuster is that we don't actually know what Connell was going to say. Was he going to reveal a vast right-wing conspiracy to steal the election, as many in the liberal blogosphere believe? Was he going to stonewall and say nothing, as he allegedly did in a deposition he gave in November? Or was he going to say the whole cabal was merely a fever dream from PO'd lefties, like recent suits from the other side claiming Barack Obama is ineligible to be president?

Would a guy so closely connected to Bush, Rove, Tom DeLay, Ken Blackwell, and others at the very core of the Republican Party suddenly flip? Connell seems an unlikely candidate for the role of "Deep Throat," IMHO.

The other problem: There hasn't been any serious reporting on this story from any source that doesn't have a clear liberal bias, as far as I can determine. The New York Times seems to have not covered this story at all, despite the fact that "Michael Connell" is the 34th most searched for term on the site in the past week (behind "it's a wonderful life" and ahead of David Pogue). That's a bit weird all by itself.

I love conspiracy theories as much as the next guy, but I'm not willing to strap on my tinfoil helmet just yet.

Even without the murder plot, though, the facts of this case are troubling. Why were Ohio's vote totals "mirrored" to a site run by a private firm in Chatanooga, Tennessee? And is it just coincidence that SmarTech is the same firm that hosted private email accounts used to conduct White House business (in violation of federal law) and "lost" millions of messages when discovered? There are more layers to this story than an onion.

Where are Woodward and Bernstein when you really need them?

Judging by its popularity on social bookmarking sites like Digg and Reddit, the Ohiogate story isn't going away. So we might yet learn the real truth about what happened to Mike Connell - and by extension, the country. Let's hope sooner rather than later.

And Oliver, if you're looking for someone to write the screenplay, you know where to reach me.

What People Are Saying

Doin' the Ditto-Head Squirm!

Good job! Mission accomplished! What's funny is how, even now, these folks rush to the defense of those evil b@$t@rd$. Great article, if not only for entertainment value (but we know the truth, right?). ;o)

lefty new york times?!

The NYT has a clear liberal bias? Maybe in the culture pages. But after 24 years of rolling over for Reagan and the Bushes and leading the false charges against Clinton, I'm just not seeing it in the front of the paper.

you misinterpreted this a bit

what I wrote was that the only places I've seen this story covered are left leaning, and that the NY Times has NOT covered it. so the 'clear liberal bias' line doesn't apply to it.

any paper that ran stories by judith miller on page one can't be considered entirely liberal. the editorial pages are another matter, obviously.

cheers,

Who's really jumping to conclusions?

Conspiracy theories are delusional indulgences for the powerless and ignorant, but what I see here is a lot of people with limited knowledge willing to jump up and declare "there's nothing to see here".

Well, yes, there is. There is the small matter of subverting the actual results of a presidential election (again). As for it being unlikely that a member of Bush's inner circle would have started blabbing, well its already happened over and over again. (The difference here is that this is something that would have really cooked them).

Perhaps the crash was due to foul play, perhaps not. I don't know, and anyone reading this who thinks they do may as well be wearing the proverbial tin-foil cap

Cute

Cute item. Man dies in plane crash, intrepid reporter makes fun of death, sticks pins in liberal voodoo dolls. Good stuff.

sorry, not trying to make fun of the man

It's a tragedy for his family and friends. I don't mean to make light of that. I am making light of the conspiracy theories surrounding his death. My apologies if that isn't clear.

NTSB synopsis available

If you want to read the NTSB synopsis on this investigation, then just go to: http://www.ntsb.gov/ntsb/brief.asp?ev_id=20081223X12815&key=1.

For all you non-aviator conspiracy theorists, he didn't run out of fuel, nor did he crash on TO. He was conducting an instrument approach and most likely became disoriented. Happens all too often. The NTSB database is full of these types of accidents.

NTSB investigation...

The NTSB will find the cause of this accident, or at the very least rule out any mechanical cause (i.e. - failure or sabotage). Crash-scene investigation is like the TV show "CSI", except it takes 6- to 12-months to get results, not 48 minutes (1 hour with commercials). Check back next year for the final results.
.
Judging from the preliminary report he had been flying for over two hours, so any 'sabotage' would've likely shown up long before in the flight.

With everything going great, conducting an instrument approach to landing in near-freezing, overcast, night-time conditions is still a difficult task. Perhaps it was icing (which may have melted by the time the investigators showed up), or it was 'spatial disorientation' of the pilot. Either way, the NTSB will root out the likely cause based upon radar track, toxicology reports, and examination of the equipment (they can differentiate between pre- vs. post-crash damage or failure).
.
I'm sure this death will have as much (or little) connection to Pres. Bush as Vince Foster's death had to the Clintons.

Sort of, almost, not quite... accurate...

Just some errors in your otherwise good coverage.

1. Connell was not "days away from" testimony. He had already testified under oath on November 3.

2. The alleged threats against Connell are part of the court record for a federal case for which he is a witness. Although the court record describes these alleged threats, all questions and answers in Connell's deposition relating to the alleged threats was sealed by the court - at the request of his attorneys.

3. The allegations that the he was warned that his plane would be tampered with was reported by a Channel 19 (Cleveland) news report, which Raw Story simply reported on.

4. There is NO proof that Connell was murdered, let alone that this murder was a Rove hit. Given the context of the allegations, the fact that Connell had given testimony in a federal case (and would be likely called back in the future for additional questions), and the allegations of threats against him raise questions about the crash that must be answered. That is not saying there was foul play. It is simply due diligence.

5. The story is very real, I just wish people had a better grasp of the facts.

Now just one question, is Jennifer Connelly to play me in your movie version? I assume the "scrappy" although not necessarily the "sexy" reporter reference is to me?

I am hoping for Kate Winslet simply because she is convincing in many a role.

Anyway, thanks for reporting on this and the media blackout of this story.

Larisa Alexandrovna
Reporter

that's funny...

because I actually was thinking of you, larisa, when casting jennifer connelly as the reporter. if jen's not available I'd be happy to contact kate's agent. she hasn't had a good role in a while, we could probably get her cheap. ;)

re the other stuff:

#1. yep, you're right. your colleague kyle at rawstory beat you to that one, though.

#2. yes, but... aren't the reports of threats solely from the attorney for the plaintiffs? did connell or his attorney report threats?

#3. yes, the original source was an anonymous one reported by a local tv newscaster. I cant say I give a lot of credibility to that, given the circumstances.

#4. yep.

#5. ditto.

thanks for weighing in.
