Elgato Systems Turbo 264

I may not record and watch a lot of TV on my iPod, but I can appreciate the speed increase that could be gained from the Elgato Systems Turbo 264, which increases the speed of encoding H.264 video by a factor of 4-15.

For regular iPod video viewers, this could save a significant amount of time when encoding recorded TV and video.

Interestingly, we're moving back to the idea of co-processors for specific purposes. I can remember back in the days of the BBC Micro you could get additional co-processors, partially for compatibility and software development, but also for taking advantage of faster processing while still having a familiar environment to work in.

We already have GPUs today, and many motherboards will have DSPs for audio processing, but I wouldn't be surprised if longer term we see some more dedicated CPUs like this, either add-ons or built in, to help with video and other types of heavy processing.
