Seeing Through Windows

Expect an early Windows 7 release

The just-leaked beta of Windows 7 isn't much different than previous Windows 7 versions. That most likely means an accelerated release schedule for the new operating system, so that Microsoft can put the Vista public relations fiasco behind it. Don't be surprised if Windows 7 ships earlier than Microsoft has hinted so far.

Windows 7 doesn't look or work much differently than Windows Vista. There are performance improvements, and some nice interface tweaks, but overall, it's not a major upgrade. Hardware that works with Windows Vista will work with Windows 7.

All that is by design. Microsoft needs to ship an operating system that doesn't include the name "Vista" in it. Vista has been seen as a fiasco by the market, and so Microsoft needs an operating system with a new name, whether it's a major upgrade or not.

Because of that, I'd be stunned if Windows 7 didn't ship in 2009, and earlier than most people expect. In fact, don't be surprised if it ships some time around mid-year.

What People Are Saying

Vista, Windows 7

I always thougt, i will stick with XP. But wen i discover Vista (and also Windows 7) 64bit.!!You will never go back to XP (or Vista) 32bit.!
64bit is the feature..!! and that's all of you must do.!! Go 64 bit..! Just look around, it's comming.!

Sticking with XP till something really better comes out...

for some time now i have been observing all the windows family grew starting from windows 3.1 and the only decent OS i got stuck to is Windows XP which in reality does pretty much everything i want to from developing managing small business networks, gaming and software development on our company. We have been monitoring/Testing all the new release and none matches a well configured built of Windows XP. All i can say for now is the company needs more money but they never seem to come up with a killer OS that could surpass XP. I'll hold my thoughts to myself for now. But really, it would have been great if they added those extra features to XP which they could but didn't because they want to make a little extra money(don't get me wrong here, i would pay for a decent OS that could surpass XP). :)

Students and teachers don't agree

I have recently downloaded the RC of Windows 7 from the microsoft website, so far I have shown it off to three different people and so far each of them has fallen in love with it. I believe it is a great improvement over Vista. The networking is vastly improved and it is FAST!! The improved interface is not vastlyu different but it has improved. Two of the technology teaches a.k.a administrators have been amazed on how fast it boots on our ThinkPads which were as slow as slugs in xp.

Not a major upgrade? Who

Not a major upgrade? Who writes this stuff!

After using the Beta, the first thing you realize is that nearly every aspect of the OS has been revamped, updated, improved, etc. This may not visually look like much of an upgrade, but technically, it's huge.

What can Vista 7 do for me?

I use XP.
I surf the net, DL movies, watch youtube, email, burn home movies to dvd, rip cd's to mp3, play video games like Fifa2009 and a few shooters. I use a program called Gimp and Picasa to edit our digital pictures.
I use some 2.x processor that's about 2 years old with 4GB ram, a good sound w/ tons of plugs and a great video card and my main C drive is SCSI.
Its pretty zippy and my files are stored on a wireless NAT with over a terabyte of storage.
I have a 6 year old printer and 8 year old scanner.

I like my setup and everything works and have the same question that I had for Vista when it came out:
What can Vista 7 do more for me than XP can?
Why should I pay money for this difference?
Is there a 'must have' feature in Vista 7 that could get me to spend my hard earned cash on another OS?

I use Vista at various places and didnt see anything I was missing (I've been using Konfabulator/Yahoo widgets for years and years) in it apart of having to remember where the new settings setups are.

Why should I buy a new OS instead of XP?
Or even why shouldnt I just use a free Linux one instead? We have family members that have the Acer One, EEE and Dell Mini and their various Linuxes (!) are easy to use.

If Microsoft is still selling XP Pro licenses (did you see how much Dell charges for them?) under certain conditions, it tells me that that OS is far from dead.

Who needs Vista/Windows 7? Not I.

I agree with Guy. XP is probably the best OS Microsoft has built in it's entire history. I have downloaded and installed Windows 7 beta and so far have just been frustrated that, a)they simply moved stuff around and changed the familiar names of the modules, b)tabs are a pain, c)the whole program contains nothing more than bells and whistles behind a confusing facade. I don't care for the fact that user options have been omitted in favor of what THEY think we should have and use. Explorer 8 is ludicrous, as was version 7. Again, all they did was move things around, creating a learning curve that is, in my opinion, counterproductive. No thanks Stevie B., I shall stay with my old reliable XP until Microsoft gets smart and gives us what we want (a reliable system) instead of what they continuously try to shove down our throats.

Ummmm....

I'm currently testing the windows 7 beta, and LET ME TELL YOU, it's AWESOME. This was the fastest install i've ever performed on any machiene with any OS. Faster than ubuntu, XP, even 98. It took 15min. Also, it starts up faster than XP (fresh install of xp, too) and is MUCH more reliable,(I have not gotten a BSOD at all, whereas XP gives BSODs all the time).
I will actually go out and BUY (weird, I know) Windows 7. It's just too good a piece of software to pass up.

why vista being accepted for so long?

Hi, I work for an MNC as a tech support executive. After serving customers for a while., I have found out that the reactions from the CUs are not because that their inability to accept the change. But bcoz of the fact that the hardware and software industry has not changed the way reqired for the Vista to change. I have been using Vista for 9 months now and I am very happy with it. However, I do agree that Vista can create some trouble to an average XP user. But I want the users to be competent enough to accept new trends!

I may be wrong but I am an average geetk, Please understand!

Welcome, Windows 7

People testing the Beta Windows 7 are confirming it runs faster than Vista because it is lighter, not devouring as much hardware as its previous version.
Second, it will be the end of the mouse era and the beginning of touch screen in computers, already popular in mobile devices.
If those are not major upgrades, I don't know how you call them.
I haven't switched my 3 year old notebook running XP this Christmas waiting for Windows 7, and I believe many other people (including businesses) are also planning to skip Vista.
Welcome, Windows 7!

Sorry to Burst your Bubble Bro

Sorry to burst your bubble my friend but touch screens are nothing new hp has been using them in vista pcs for 4 generations now, the issue is not using them with an operating system but developing a stand alone monitor and software so that all computers can benefit, dont forget that vista has tablet software built into it, so there is nothing new about touch screens. my appologies if i destroyed your world... and dont go throwing your mouse away just yet nastrodamous because have you ever tried to play a video game on a touch screen... good luck.

Why dont you give windows Mojave a spin i hear its a better build then vista anyway ;)
