Feds lie about link between software piracy and terrorism

The U.S. Justice Department seems to believe that if you tell a big enough lie, people will listen. Here's the latest: Attorney General Michael Mukasey claims that terrorists sell pirated software as a way to finance their operations, without presenting a shred of evidence for his case. He's doing it to push through a controversial piece of legislation that's bad for you.

In a talk last week before at the Tech Museum of Innovation, Mukasey used his best fearmongering tactics to link software piracy to terrorists. In his speech, which you can read in its entirety here, he told the group:

Criminal syndicates, and in some cases even terrorist groups, view IP crime as a lucrative business, and see it as a low-risk way to fund other activities.

Mukasey went on to cite numerous cases in which the Justice Department has arrested those who pirate software, and in which the department has cooperated with other countries in investigations. He mentioned arrests in Florida, investigations in China, and warned about the Russian mob being involved in selling pirated software.

In not a single instance did Mukasey include a link to terrorism. Not one. You can be sure that if there were any links, Mukasey would make sure to get them on the nightly news.

So why is Mukasey trying to convince people there's a link between software piracy and terrorism, even though one doesn't exist? To force Congress to pass controversial intellectual property (IP) legislation that would increase IP penalties, increase police power, set up a new agency to investigate IP theft, and more.

Industry lobbyists have been pushing for it. And now Mukasey is trying to convince the country that the bill needs to be passed as a way to fight terrorism.

Hmmm....let's see. Our federal government tells us a lie about a terrorist link that doesn't exist, then tries to convince Congress and the country to take controversial action based on that lie. That has a familiar ring to it, doesn't it? We're still paying for believing that last lie --- let's not repeat the mistake.

UFO's and Hybrid Humans

I'm putting Preston Gralla in with the people I think of as UFO and Hybrid Humans nuts.

I had an fellow student in my early college days whose one passion was warning everyone about how the GOVERNMENT was breeding humans with animals to come up with some kind of super soldier. Maybe his problem was lack of information or lack of reasoning or maybe he was just a nut. But I tried to help him. I'll try to help Gralla.

Living in an area of the world that is not the United States perhaps I can provide some basic information. 1. Incomes within 50 miles of where I am writing can be as low as $300, US dollars a month and that is for the entire family. Basic computer geek from a polytech about $800. Regionally think $100. 2. Internet connections if they exist are often dial-up with unreliable phone lines. 3. A store selling illegal software, DVD movies, music etc. may be set up on the sidewalk usually outside some source of public transportation or other gathering place. Probably at least 5000 plus unique packages. That is a CD or DVD in a case. A flier and a plastic bag of an appropriate size. 4. Mass production of illegal CD's/DVD's less than 50 cents. Selling price $5. 5. Selling a couple of grams of cocaine. A Hanging offence! Frankly selling illegal software is an easy way to make lots of easy safe money.. 6. Religion - Mostly not what you would find in the OLD US of A at least not in the same ratios.

Now about reason. I'm sorry but if I'm in the illegal line. Terrorism or Gangs. I make the money the way I can. I find it incredible that an intelligent person would question that terrorists sell illegal copies of Microsoft or anything else. When you get right down to it, it is a pretty big planet. By the way they are probably selling copies of RedHat and Ubuntu also.

Now about t-shirts over the Internet. Duh! bozos. I can buy all kinds of Disney products and high fashion stuff I think that your favorite t-shirt might not be a problem.

Thanks,

Carlton

Okay, I see one of your points

I can see you've made the point he is using unsubstantiated claims about terrorist links. However, it would be nice if you could tell me what's wrong with the IP legislation. What is he trying to accomplish? To simply infer that he's lied and that's like some previous supposed lie is incomplete journalism.

Stick to your point and state your complete case.

Que

What he is trying to accomplish is legislation being passed based on lies/scare tactics. That, in and of itself, is a reason to say no to the legislation and request a new bill proposal with honest rationales for it to be adopted. Cynically accepting lies only results in mor cynicism and lies.

I don't know if its already

I don't know if its already been said but anyone with an interent connection already can get just about any software free, even programs that require hardware keys have been cracked. So how does terrorism compete with free to make any money? My opinion, people who use illegal software don't want to purchase/cant afford the real thing. so how much money are corps really losing anyways.

Typical fascism

"Fascism should more properly be called corporatism, because it is the merger of corporate and state power."
- Musolini, the man who coined the word fascism.

This behavior is typical of a fascist regime. Whenever there is a conflict between the benefit of citizens and the benefit of corporations, our government works vigorously for the corporations' interests.

File sharing enhances the lives of citizens and reduces profits of corporations. So we all know what direction the powers that be will call apon us to goose step.

Since Bush has done more to assist the merger of corporate and state power than any other president, he is the most fascist president the USA has ever had.

Our only protections from fascism and other forms or tyrany are the constitution, an educated AND well informeded citizenry, and an ever-present vigilance. Bush and his republicans have stripped our constitution, systematically dismantled media regulation to allow consolidation, and many other fascist changes.

If it looks like a duck, walks like a duck and sounds like a duck, ITS A DUCK!

Dealing with the Root of Evil

Finally our law makers are seeing the light and trying to deal with the root of terrorism, and a bunch of liberal yahoos have to create noise on the line. Since when have we become so concerned with protecting the rights of terrorists anyway? Have you all forgotten the atrocities of 9/11??? Folks, these are essential tools in the hands of the GOOD GUYS to uproot terrorism wherever it grows. Support your government so it can protect you.

Not wanting protection....

Thoughts such as yours are adolescent nonsense. If you're just being a smart---, you're revealing more than you know...if you're serious, then you need professional help.
